Sister/Charge Nurse Band 6 Cherry Ward (NHS AfC: Band 6) - Charge Nurse / Sister Band 6 - Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
We are looking for a highly motivated and innovative band 6 ward sister / charge nurse to work and help lead our team on our 9 bedded Cystic Fibrosis / Respiratory Medicine ward at the outstanding Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, renowned for its delivery of excellent, compassionate and safe patient care. The ward specialises in the care of Cystic Fibrosis patients and cares for patients with a variety of respiratory / cardiology conditions.
You will demonstrate excellent knowledge and previous experience of caring for respiratory patients as well as processing excellent leadership skills. You will need to have the ability to influence others and effectively manage change. You will need to demonstrate your commitment to continuous professional development for yourself and your team, ensuring that all staff have the necessary knowledge and skills to deliver safe, effective care.
Your responsibilities will include:
1. Leading the ward day to day.
2. Mentoring and supporting the staff on the ward.
3. Ensuring accurate documentation and risk assessment compliance.
4. Ensuring compliance in mandatory training.
5. Leading the ward round with the MDT to deliver holistic care to our patients.
6. Completing audits to ensure patient safety and provide assurance.
7. Completing action plans and presentations for incidents that occur.
8. Supporting the ward manager in managerial duties.
9. Taking responsibility for a group of patients and being their named nurse.
10. Completing ECGs for the patients and being willing to expand on your skills to include venepuncture, cannulation, catheterisation, etc.

CLINICAL:
1. Perform comprehensive assessment of patient nursing needs, plan, implement and evaluate care delivery according to changing health care needs and varying levels of complexity.
2. Collect, collate, evaluate and report information maintaining accurate patient records.
3. Involve patients and carers/relatives in the planning and delivery of care.
4. Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure patient needs are met, especially in relation to ongoing care needs and discharge arrangements.
5. Establish and maintain effective communication with patients and carers/relatives.
6. Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
7. Respect confidential information obtained in the course of professional practice and uphold the principles of Caldicott and the Data Protection Act.
MANAGERIAL/LEADERSHIP:
1. Deputise for the Ward Manager in the management and organisation of the ward.
2. Accept delegated line management responsibilities of other team members including performance development reviews and personal development planning.
3. Support the Ward Manager to maximise best use of clinical resources, implementing best practice in patient flow, admission and discharge arrangements.
4. Participate in the recruitment and retention of staff.
5. Support the Ward Manager with the monitoring of performance of staff ensuring that learning needs are identified through personal development planning/supervised practice.
6. Promote the development of services within the ward area and assist the ward manager to implement change.
7. Ensure the effective and efficient use of physical and financial resources.
8. Monitor health, safety and security of self and others and promote/implement best practice in the ward area.
EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT:
1. Provide and make effective use of learning and development opportunities for ward team.
2. Develop own expert clinical knowledge and participate in the development of others.
3. Ensure own compliance and compliance of others with regard to mandatory training and PREP requirements.
4. Coordinate and deliver training programmes and promote an effective clinical learning environment.
5. Act as a mentor for all nurses in training and newly qualified nurses.
CLINICAL QUALITY:
1. Assist the ward manager in ward audit and the development and implementation of the ward action plan.
2. Ensure compliance with policies, procedures and clinical guidelines for self and others, participate in the development of same.
3. Continually monitor standards of care and lead the improvement of care, through the clinical quality monitoring group, audit and research.
4. Assist patient and public involvement activities in the ward area, leading to service improvement.
5. Promote people's equality, diversity and rights and take action when your own or other people's actions undermine these rights.
Registered Nurses at the Cardiothoracic Centre have a responsibility to:
1. Maintain active status on NMC register.
2. Always act in accordance with NMC and LHCH Code of Conduct and guiding documents.
3. Adhere to Trust policy and procedure.
4. Undertake Clinical Supervision.
5. Maintain up to date skills and knowledge and maintain awareness of professional issues.
