Senior Secondary Systems Control & Protection Design Engineers
Siemens Mobility have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Secondary Systems Control & Protection Design Engineers to join our expanding Rail Infrastructure Electrification Power Conversion Engineering Team in York, UK.

This is a unique opportunity to lead innovative projects in railway electrification for clients in the UK and globally, in close collaboration with our German Engineering Team. As the Senior Secondary Systems Control & Protection Design Engineer, you’ll oversee the delivery of high-quality control and protection designs, mentor junior team members, and guide secondary design to achieve safety, cost, and program goals. Reporting to the Principal Power Conversion Engineer, you’ll develop the Secondary Systems team and manage technical planning for High and Medium Voltage Converter Stations, integrating designs across diverse disciplines from LV to HV, Civils to SCADA, with support from specialists.
You‘ll make a difference by
* Being Technical responsibility for all secondary systems, control & protection designs of AC substations and Converter Stations utilising Power Electronics technology to meet the requirements of the contract, promoting safety, minimising cost, considering constructability and future reliability.
* Having accountability for approving secondary engineering design of the team as required.
* Verifying authority of all secondary designs i.e. SLD, KLD, scheme drawings, interlocking, wiring diagrams, interface lists, signal lists, termination wiring schedules, design calculations including voltage drop, setting calculations, CT/VT sizing, etc.
* Having Responsible for co-ordination with the client, civil, project management and other interfaces to deliver a high-quality technical output from the team in line with the agreed delivery timescales and budget.
* Conducting customer training and support PreFAT/FAT and commissioning activities.
* Actively participate in research and development activities together with other specialists to develop the state-of-the-art secondary systems of future power conversion products and solutions.
* Being responsible for ensuring design risk assessments/HAZID’s are in place for all design solutions and residual risks are passed on to the H&S file. Positively influence design and construction safety performance and aims for zero accidents.

Sets goals and clarifies expectations of the team on the delivery of Projects. Invests time to lead and facilitate the work of others. Where called upon the post holder would also undertake the role of Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE) in accordance with the requirements of Network Rail regime and shall be able to demonstrate competencies associated with NR/L2/INI/02009.
Your success will be grounded by
* Having a bachelor or Masters degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering or equivalent experience. Member of the IET or equivalent Professional Body; Chartered status is desirable.
* Having extensive proven experience leading, delivering high quality secondary systems control & protection design designs and having verification authority within the Electricity Transmission, Distribution or Railway industry using Power Electronics technology in HVDC, FACTS, Railway Static Frequency Converters, Rolling Stock traction and auxiliary power converters and other motor drives.
* Having proven experience in Secondary systems, control & protection automated design software such as ELCAD, Engineering base, Comos including good understanding of data structuring and high-level experience with database systems; experience as a tool product owner, maintaining a strategic backlog for feature development and rollout, and coordinating with collaborators.
* Being fully conversant with the latest Transmission, Distribution and/or Railway standards & technologies with practical construction experience.
* Having good knowledge in communication protocols used in automation systems like IEC101, IEC104, IEC61850, security standards (IEC 62443, ISO 27019), technologies and best practices for substation automation engineering ideally with multiple vendors.
* Demonstrable HSQE management knowledge including CDM requirements.
* Experience with direct client interface and representing the business to external parties is desirable.
* Proven level of management experience including supervising and developing junior colleagues, Strong communication and presentation skills.
