As an apprentice, you’ll work at Murray Tech and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff. The apprenticeship tasks/focus will be around training in all aspects of control systems as well as gaining extensive knowledge of engineering materials.
Apprentices will be working as part of the team, completing the requirements of the Fitter Standard. To ensure you gain the experience, you will:
* Gain an understanding of General Arrangement & Schematic Drawings
* Gain an understanding of components and how they operate
* Laying out / fitting out back plates and doors
* Wiring control panels
* Get an understanding of pump / motor starting and control applications; DOL, ASD, Soft Start, VFD
* Carry out point to point checks
* Carry out torque checks
* Get involved in functionality and testing with a Test Engineer
* Installing cable containment on site
* Installing SWA Power supply, control & instrument cabling
* Glanding & termination of cables
* Installing field Junction Boxes / Isolators, Emergency Stops & Support Frames
* Installation of level equipment & support frames
* Installation of lighting systems
* Setting up field instrument devices
* BS7671 Testing
Apprentices will undertake a Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard programme. This will include a full-time period of practical workshop-based ‘off-the-job’ training at SETA’s Apprenticeship Centre in Southampton.
You will also begin a knowledge qualification (depending on your prior attainments) where you will be required to attend SETA one day a week over two academic years.
After your initial training at SETA, you will be with your employer working on developing your skills, ultimately leading to your End Point Assessment.
SETA will make regular visits during this period to ensure you cover all the required aspects of the Standard, which includes a practical element, a theory test, and a professional discussion regarding the work achieved with your employer.
These final tests are administered by an independent assessment organization and take place in the last three months of the apprenticeship.
At SETA: Mon-Thurs 8 am - 4.15 pm / Fri 8 am - 3 pm. At Employer: Mon - Fri 08:00 am - 16:30 pm.
