We’re looking for young people (aged 18 to 30) who are passionate about nature and want to join a group focused on empowering young people to be involved in nature’s recovery.
The Young Leader network was established in 2018 and has since been instrumental in providing youth voices and perspectives across the work of the Scottish Wildlife Trust.
The role requires a minimum commitment of 2 hours per month, with the opportunity to increase this based on the needs of the Trust and the availability of individual Young Leaders. This flexibility allows each Young Leader to develop skills and gain experience through participation in opportunities that are right for them. Currently, the group has online meetings every two weeks for project development and in-person meetings at reserves 3-4 a year for networking, training, and socialising.
Role duration:
Ongoing, or until the end of the year in which the individual turns 30 years old.
Responsibilities:
The role contains a mix of youth-led projects and optional opportunities provided by the Trust. The responsibilities are therefore very broad and will vary between volunteers.
Projects and opportunities are selected that will help achieve the Young Leader’s five core goals and help their personal development:
1. Communicate about the climate and biodiversity crisis
2. Involve young people in decision-making and amplify their voices
3. Engage young people with nature and wildlife in Scotland and empower them with the tools and skills to take action
4. Create networks and communities through social media and events
5. Contribute to and amplify the work of the Scottish Wildlife Trust
In general, it is expected that Young Leaders can commit to:
* Attending meetings: Young Leaders are regionally based so this will involve a mix of face-to-face and online meetings.
* Developing projects: To meet and work with a like-minded team of Young Leaders to develop projects that will help the Scottish Wildlife Trust achieve its vision.
* Creating digital content: Contribute to social media and other digital communications, for example through blogs and video content.
* Inspiring others: Act as role models to help inspire other young members, and young people outside of the Trust.
* Representing the Scottish Wildlife Trust: Attend events and promote the work of the Young Leaders of the Scottish Wildlife Trust.
What we are looking for:
* Aged 18 – 30 years
* A member of the Scottish Wildlife Trust
* Minimum of 2 hours a month and 8-month commitment
* Willingness to work as part of a team to achieve project aims
* Passion for wildlife and conservation
* Ability and willingness to inspire others
Useful but not essential:
* Interest in the conservation sector as a potential career path
* Experience in social media and communications
* Experience in events and public speaking
* Experience of working with young people
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion:
We welcome and encourage applications from people currently under-represented in the environment sector. If you would like more information about our Equality and Equal Opportunities policy, please contact Rachel, the Engagement Officer (contact details below).
