Job Overview
The NHS Trust is seeking an experienced and compassionate Locum Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry to provide clinical leadership and high-quality mental health care to adult patients. The successful candidate will work within a multi-disciplinary team, managing a diverse caseload and supporting patients in both inpatient and community settings. This is an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist to contribute to service improvement and work within a supportive environment focused on excellence in mental health care.
Key Responsibilities
* Clinical Leadership and Patient Care:
o Deliver high-quality, patient-centered care to adults with a wide range of mental health conditions, including mood disorders, psychosis, personality disorders, and anxiety disorders.
o Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments, diagnostic evaluations, and develop individualized treatment plans.
o Provide direct clinical care through outpatient consultations, inpatient care, and community support services as appropriate.
o Lead multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings to review cases, coordinate care, and ensure best practice in treatment delivery.
o Offer specialist advice and consultation to other clinical staff, supporting complex case management.
* On-Call and Emergency Duties:
o Participate in the consultant on-call rota, managing psychiatric emergencies, risk assessments, and crisis interventions as required.
o Provide clinical support to junior doctors and other team members during on-call shifts to ensure high standards of care and safety.
* Supervision, Teaching, and Mentorship:
o Supervise and mentor junior doctors, specialty trainees, and other mental health professionals.
o Provide regular teaching sessions, case discussions, and professional development activities within the department.
o Support educational and developmental needs of junior staff, creating a positive learning environment.
* Research, Clinical Governance, and Quality Improvement:
o Participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, and quality improvement projects.
o Contribute to research initiatives within the psychiatry department and keep up-to-date with evidence-based practices in general adult psychiatry.
o Engage in risk management, safeguarding, and adherence to NHS Trust policies and guidelines.
* Administrative and Policy Development:
o Maintain thorough and accurate patient records in line with NHS policies, ensuring compliance with documentation standards.
o Attend departmental and trust-wide meetings, contributing to policy development, service improvement, and strategy planning.
o Collaborate with healthcare providers, social services, and community partners to enhance patient care pathways and continuity of care.
Essential Qualifications and Requirements
* Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent) recognized by the General Medical Council (GMC).
* Full GMC Registration with a license to practice in the UK.
* Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in General Adult Psychiatry or eligibility within six months of interview.
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Psychiatry (or eligibility within six months of the interview date).
* Extensive Experience in Adult Psychiatry: Significant experience in managing adult mental health conditions in both inpatient and community settings, preferably within the NHS.
* Excellent Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Ability to work effectively with patients, families, and multi-disciplinary teams, and to provide compassionate care.
* Competence in Risk Assessment and Crisis Management: Skilled in performing thorough risk assessments, crisis management, and formulating treatment plans for complex cases.
* Legal Right to Work in the UK
Desirable Qualifications
* Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or equivalent.
* Additional Subspecialty Interests: Experience in or interest in subspecialties such as perinatal psychiatry, early intervention, or dual diagnosis.
* Research and Publication Record: Previous contributions to research, publications, or conference presentations in the field of psychiatry.
* Experience in Service Development: Proven experience in service improvement, policy development, or leadership in mental health services.
* Commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD): Evidence of regular CPD activities and involvement in educational opportunities.
