Job overview
The practice educator will work collaboratively with the senior nursing staff within the Clinical Research Facility (CRF) to support the delivery of effective, high quality, safe patient centred care and clinical research studies. They will do this primarily through the provision of expert leadership on Practice Development, Education and Training, and through the provision of professional leadership via the Professional Nurse Advocate role.
The post holder will role model exemplary Clinical Research Nursing. They will retain a small portfolio of studies to maintain their skills and demonstrate best practice. It is anticipated the CPE will work on studies 20-30% of the time and focus on clinical practice education 70-80% of the time. These allocations will be approached flexibly and managed in consultation with the CRF Lead Research Nurse.
The CRF's core hours are 09:00-17:00, Monday to Friday however study protocol demands and patient safety require occasional work outside of these hours. All CRF staff are expected to contribute to the safe staffing of work outside of the CRF's core hours. This may include early, twilight, night or weekend shifts.
Main duties of the job
* Lead the continuing education, training and professional development for CRF staff and students to promote the acquisition of knowledge, skills and behaviours required for the delivery of world-class care and cutting-edge research.
* Develop and drive forward embedding of best practice in line with local and national guidelines and research regulations through teaching, demonstration, competency assessment and audit, and ensure that nursing and research procedures and policies are properly embedded within practice.
* Act as a Professional Nurse Advocate providing restorative clinical support and supervision, leading and promoting quality improvement, promoting professional development and standards in clinical practice, and acting as a role model to high standards in clinical practice.
* Develop and deliver a comprehensive programme of emergency scenarios, training and skills acquisition which assures the emergency readiness capacity and capability of the CRF.
* Participate in the review of studies submitted to the CRF Adoption Committee, identifying risk mitigations and clinical practice and educational requirements for each study.
* Coordinate relevant training to ensure staff are appropriately trained to complete the tasks delegated to them on study delegation logs and respond to emergencies.
Person specification
Education & professional qualifications
* 1st level Registered Nurse
* Current ICH Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certificate
* Current Intermediate Life Support (ILS) certification
* NMC approved mentorship course or equivalent
* Degree in related subject
* Accredited PNA module or willingness to work towards
Experience
* Recent substantial post-registration experience in research
* Substantial and recent experience working in a senior role (Band 6 or above)
* Substantial experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team
* Experienced in managing, coordinating, delivering and evaluating teaching programmes for staff and students
* Experienced in change management
* Experienced in practice development
* Able to assess practice and give constructive feedback
* Experienced in the set-up, delivery, management and close out of clinical research studies
* Experienced in the conduct of early phase clinical trials
* Experience or recruiting, educating and monitoring patients within clinical trials
Skills and aptitudes
* Current and in-depth knowledge of clinical research
* Current in professional issues
