Role Description
The Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Manager will be a key member of the HSE Team, reporting directly to the HSE Director. They will provide expert guidance and strategic support on all aspects of health and safety across the company, working closely with our Development, Construction, Asset Management, and Operational Teams. A key focus is fostering a strong HSE culture.
In this role, they will be instrumental in ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations while actively promoting a strong safety culture. Their leadership will contribute to maintaining our industry-leading HSE record and embedding safety excellence into our core operations as an Independent Power Producer (IPP).
The role supports business partners across Low Carbon, ensuring HSE best practices are embedded in all activities to help achieve goals as an IPP. This includes developing and implementing HSE policies that enhance business performance while ensuring regulatory compliance. During construction, the individual ensures adherence to CDM regulations, contractor safety management, and risk mitigation. In operations, they oversee the handover and management of H&S files, plant safety, audits, emergency response, and ongoing compliance.
Key Responsibilities
* Conducting regular audits to ensure compliance with safety regulations and best practices
* Promoting and supporting a progressive, non-blame H&S culture
* Assisting the business in meeting health, safety, and environmental compliance requirements
* Supporting and educating staff on relevant Health & Safety standards, legislation, and industry best practices
* Contributing to the development of a best-in-class EPC tender process
* Co-developing, delivering, and coordinating an Emergency Response Test process for the Operational Team
* Auditing Low Carbon businesses and offices regularly to assess health, safety, environmental, and security compliance, documenting findings, and ensuring hazard mitigation recommendations are implemented
* Supporting clients and business stakeholders in understanding and fulfilling their CDM responsibilities
* Ensuring risk assessments for business activities are up-to-date and aligned with best practices
* Co-investigating all accidents, dangerous occurrences, and incidents with significant potential, producing reports, and providing recommendations to prevent recurrence
* Assisting the Asset Management Team in closing out open HSE incidents
* Collaborating with the Asset Management Team on the annual operational plan
Skills & Experience
The ideal candidate will have demonstratable experience in Health & Safety Management within a relevant industry or related field. Prior experience in risk assessment, operations management, and quality control is essential, along with the ability to demonstrate:
Essential
* NEBOSH / IOSH Membership
* In-depth knowledge of safety regulations, including HASWA, CDM, MHSWR
* A proven track record of successfully managing compliance on construction and operational assets
* Strong prioritisation skills, with the ability to assess and manage risks effectively
* A solid understanding of contractual obligations, including managing EPC and O&M contracts
* Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport quickly and develop long-term relationships with stakeholders
* Strong communication skills, enabling effective engagement with OEMs, contractors, and clients
* Research and analytical skills to align with company safety KPIs
* Experience in risk management, including developing Risk Assessments and Method Statements
* A proactive, self-starting mindset with a passion for the renewable energy industry and a commitment to maximizing asset ROI while ensuring safety and adherence to best practices
* Valid UK driving licence (as travel to remote sites required)
Desirable
* GradIOSH or above
* Good working knowledge of DSEAR, and ATEX regulations
* Previous expertise in electricity generation, particularly solar and battery storage
