An opportunity has arisen to join GCU as a full time Lecturer in Fashion in the Department of Fashion, Marketing, Tourism and Events (FMTE). Situated in the Glasgow School for Business and Society, FMTE runs undergraduate and postgraduate fashion programmes in design, branding and marketing that offer students an industry-relevant experience with a focus on employability.
This post is primarily teaching focused and we are seeking candidates who have industry experience in fashion design and production and have also lectured in the Higher Education sector. A relevant master’s degree is expected however, applicants with a fashion based honours degree and significant relevant fashion industry experience will also be considered.
Candidates must have excellent creative design capability as well as high level technical skills in garment pattern cutting and garment production, and the expertise to teach this from foundation to advanced level. They must also have the ability to develop and deliver a range of fashion modules using industry standard production equipment and be skilled in the use of digital technologies and software such as Adobe Creative. Proficiency in fashion illustration, creative branding and visual communications would also be desirable.
The successful candidate will work closely with a small academic and technical team to deliver mainly practice based fashion modules at undergraduate level and will also contribute to other teaching and supervision of UG and PG dissertations. They will be expected to take immediate responsibility for teaching and module management and to engage in further development of the subject area to ensure the curriculum is relevant and current.
As well as industry and lecturing experience, candidates should have a proven record of engagement with contemporary fashion practice and be aware of key developments in the sector. They should also have excellent communication, planning and organisational skills and a collaborative approach to working with colleagues and students.
Shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit a portfolio of relevant work in advance and to give a presentation on the day of interview. A successful practical skills test will be a requirement for final appointment. The interviews will take place in late April with the aim of appointment at the earliest opportunity.
