An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Practice Development Midwife (PDM) to join our team.
As a PDM you will be responsible for advancing and enhancing the quality of care within Maternity.
The role involves designing, implementing, and evaluating educational and developmental programmes for midwives and other healthcare professionals to improve clinical practices and patient outcomes.
The PDM team plays a vital role in advancing the knowledge, skills, and practices of midwives, ultimately improving the quality of care provided to service users and their families
Full-time and part time positions are available. Flexible working applications are welcome.
Main duties of the job
Some of the main duties of the job include:
Develop curriculum, training materials, and resources to enhance clinical skills and knowledge.
Stay updated on the latest evidence-based practices in midwifery.
Develop and update clinical guidelines and standards to ensure adherence to best practices.
Conduct training sessions and workshops for midwives to improve their clinical competencies.
Provide ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance the skills of the maternity care team.
Collaborate with healthcare teams to identify areas for improvement in maternity care
Implement quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and satisfaction.
Engage in research activities to contribute to the advancement of midwifery practices.
Integrate innovative approaches and technologies into clinical care as appropriate.
Provide mentorship and support to midwives, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
Address challenges and concerns related to clinical practices through guidance and coaching.
Work closely the lead midwife for education, education team members and other healthcare professionals, including obstetricians, nurses, and administrators.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Collaborate with external organisations and institutions to share best practices and promote collaborative learning
Analyse data related to clinical outcomes and performance metrics.
Prepare and present reports to highlight achievements and areas for improvement.
Develop educational materials for expectant mothers and their families.
Ensure that patients are well-informed about their care and have a positive birthing experience.
Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and guidelines
Communicate the outcome of training needs analysis, CPD planning and aspects of programme enrolment to staff.
Organise, plan and implementing Maternity Education Training to MDT
Promote continuous professional development for staff and be able to signpost to relevant staff/agencies as required
Support delivery of onboarding of new starters and provide efficient and effective inductions, liaising with the lead midwife for recruitment/ recruitment and onboarding team

Education and qualifications
Essential criteria
1. Registered Midwife with a UK NMC Pin
2. SSSA/Mentorship qualification
3. Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
4. PGCert
Knowledge
Essential criteria
5. Knowledge of educational standards and practice
6. Understanding of the principles of teaching and learning and their application within the practice setting
Desirable criteria
7. Understanding and knowledge of curriculum design and development
8. Awareness of MIS/ Core competency framework and other local, regional and national initiatives
9. Knowledge of a variety of teaching methods
Experience
Essential criteria
10. Substantial post registration experience, with evidence of working in all areas of maternity
Desirable criteria
11. Experience teaching in variety of settings
12. Able to present articulately to large groups of people
Skills and ability
Essential criteria
13. Excellent time management and organisational skills
14. Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal & communication skills
15. Proficient in venepuncture, cannulation, perineal suturing and episiotomy
16. Ability to give effective feedback and feedforward to maternity staff
17. Able to assess competence and level of understanding.
18. Demonstrates leadership skills.
19. Demonstrates understanding of PDM role and able to recognise when to escalate to PDM Lead
20. Ability to co-ordinate & liaise within a multidisciplinary team
