SUB-SPECIALTY TRAINEE IN PAEDIATRIC EMERGENCY MEDICINE

Applications for applicants who are an existing higher trainee in Emergency Medicine and hold a National Training Number (NTN) in Emergency Medicine are invited for a year’s additional training to sub-specialise in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM), which will include:
* Six months of Paediatric Emergency Medicine based in the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital (RACH) Emergency Department
* Three months of Medical Paediatrics based in RACH
* Three months of Paediatric Critical Care based in the Royal Hospital for Children (RHC) Glasgow
The post is available from 6th August 2025. It is expected that the applicant will be able to work as an ST4+ registrar within the Paediatric Emergency Department (including resuscitation room), Medical Ward, and Critical Care settings. In addition to clinical work, the applicant will be supported to undertake activities such as Quality Improvement, audit, and contribution to local steering groups.
RACH provides all specialist care for children up to the age of 16 years in the Grampian Region and the Orkney and Shetland Islands. The Emergency Department (ED) at RACH, where the successful applicant will be based for 50% of the post, is a supportive one for trainees. Consultants are on the shop floor from 08:00 to 02:00 and on site on call from 02:00 - 08:00. We employ a successful and self-rostering system with protected regional teaching and Educational Development Time. You will have the opportunity to develop interests across the PEM spectrum. The Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital is a recognised Regional Paediatric Major Trauma Centre in the North of Scotland served by a Pre-hospital Retrieval Team. Candidates will be exposed to a broad range of complex trauma management. RCH Glasgow is one of two centres in Scotland providing Paediatric Critical Care and Retrieval as part of a national network.
