Job Summary
The Medical Support Worker role is a pivotal role providing clinical support to trainee and foundation doctors.
You will be working in inpatient wards and departments within the Division of Surgery at Aintree Hospital. You will be part of a small team but will work autonomously to clinically prioritize workload.
You will carry out core clinical skills, diagnostic tests such as venapuncture, arterial blood gases, bladder scan in order to support the medical team. You will perform cannulation and catheterisation, as well as seeking to prepare test results and ensuring appropriate oversight of investigation findings.
You will be required to demonstrate experience of working in a healthcare environment and the necessary skills required in the job description.

Main Duties of the Job
1. Provide support to trainee doctors, particularly foundation doctors within specified rotas.
2. Identify and prepare patient data & information in preparation for admission, Ward/Board rounds & discharge.
3. Ensure that appropriate reports and investigation results are available for ward rounds to assist with contemporaneous decision making.
4. Seek out relevant investigations, reports and results and report back to the medical teams.
5. Carry out core clinical skills that will promote a high standard of care such as venepuncture, cannulation and catheterisation.
6. Participate in the development of self and others.
7. Work collaboratively and cooperatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families.

Job Responsibilities
1. Maintain good communication skills with patients and relatives, demonstrating a variety of communication skills.
2. Liaise with members of the MDT in relation to patient care.
3. Attend and record designated ward round actions within patient records.
4. Seek out and record the results of patient investigations and tests.
5. Coordinate and be responsible for the administrative aspects of patient care, including the sourcing of case notes, liaison with other departments, booking procedures.
6. Deliver clinical skills and therapeutic care to patients as required within set protocols and procedures as delegated by the clinical teams, following appropriate training and supervision.
7. Respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
8. Measure, monitor and record vital signs; Temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respirations, Oxygen saturation and report adverse signs to a registered nurse/doctor.
9. Plan and prioritise own delegated workload.
10. Following appropriate ANTT training, supervision and competency sign off, undertake and perform clinical skills to enhance the delivery of patient care e.g. venepuncture, peripheral cannulation, blood cultures, arterial blood gas analysis urinary catheterisation & ECG recording.
11. Identify any outstanding screening for VTE, dementia to be completed by trainee doctors.
12. Support trainee doctors with the e-discharge process and ensure completion in a timely manner.
13. Support trainee doctors in the completion of relevant risk assessments e.g. VTE.
14. Support trainee doctors in ordering investigations and delivering samples to the correct location in a timely manner.
15. Deliver high standards of care implementing prescribed treatment plans and make minor changes to patient care with defined parameters.
16. Liaise with appropriate departmental staff and the discharge team to optimise the smooth transition of patients throughout their patient pathway.
17. Maintain clear, concise and legible documentation and adhere to Trust policies and procedures and clinical protocols pertinent to the role.
