Description Role Purpose The Sustainable Development Coordinator is responsible for driving sustainability initiatives across all aspects of Cornwall Airport Newquay’s operations. This role focuses on developing and implementing effective environmental strategies, advancing compliance and policy frameworks, and promoting sustainability awareness and engagement among stakeholders. The coordinator ensures the airport achieves its environmental objectives while supporting operational efficiency and profitability. Key Responsibilities Strategic Sustainability Planning and Execution • Develop and implement comprehensive sustainability strategies aligned with Cornwall Airport Newquay’s sustainability strategy, especially during major projects to minimise environmental impact. • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate sustainability priorities into the airport’s strategic objectives and ensure continuity in sustainable practices. Policy Development and Compliance • Update and enforce environmental policies across all operational, infrastructure, and corporate levels within the airport. • Ensure ongoing compliance with environmental legislation and best practices, making adjustments as needed to meet evolving regulatory standards. Stakeholder Education and Communication • Lead educational initiatives to build awareness and promote the airport’s sustainability efforts among staff, passengers, and community members. • Work with the Marketing team to develop and execute communication strategies to convey the airport’s sustainability commitments to both internal and external stakeholders effectively. Environmental and Business Impact Analysis • Monitor and report on environmental health metrics, assessing the impact of airport activities and identifying areas for improvement. • Design and implement initiatives to offset environmental impacts, aligning sustainability objectives with business goals to balance environmental and financial considerations. Sustainability and Profitability Integration • Work closely with finance and operations teams to align environmental goals with business needs, ensuring sustainable practices support the airport’s profitability and growth. • Provide recommendations that weigh both environmental and financial factors, ensuring a balanced approach to sustainable development. Environmental Impact Monitoring and Reporting • Conduct regular environmental impact assessments and collaborate on mitigation strategies to address negative effects. • Lead the sustainability reporting process, compiling transparent, data-driven reports on the airport’s environmental performance for internal reviews and public disclosures. Leadership and Team Development • Exhibit strong leadership skills to guide and support staff, stakeholders, and cross-departmental teams in adopting sustainable practices. • Foster a culture of environmental stewardship and social responsibility throughout the airport community. Sustainable Operations and Resource Management • Spearhead initiatives to reduce resource consumption, optimise waste management, enhance recycling programs, and promote low-emission transportation solutions. • Research and implement technologies and practices to reduce the airport’s carbon footprint, supporting the airport’s carbon reduction strategy. Stakeholder and Community Engagement • Act as the primary contact for environmental concerns raised by passengers, employees, regulatory bodies, and the local community. • Collaborate with industry partners, suppliers, and regulators to advance sustainable practices within the aviation sector. Qualifications, Skills, Experience and Competencies Essential: • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Sustainable Development, Business with Environmental focus, or a related field. • Experience in sustainability, environmental management, or corporate social responsibility roles, preferably within aviation, transport, or other regulated industries. • Strategic Thinking: Ability to develop long-term sustainability plans that align with organisational goals and drive measurable impact. • Project Management: Strong project planning and coordination skills, with experience managing multiple sustainability initiatives and collaborating across departments. • Communication and Engagement: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey complex environmental topics to a variety of stakeholders, including staff, community, and regulatory bodies. • Leadership and Influence: Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire a team, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship and sustainability awareness. • Problem-Solving: Creative and solution-oriented mindset, capable of assessing environmental challenges and implementing actionable solutions. Desirable: • Masters degree in a sustainability-related field is highly advantageous. • Hands-on experience in developing, implementing, and monitoring sustainability strategies and policies, with an emphasis on Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions management. • Familiarity with relevant environmental legislation, compliance requirements, and industry standards. • Familiarity with carbon accounting, environmental impact assessment, resource management, and sustainable procurement practices. • Proficiency in using relevant software for environmental reporting and data management is preferred.
