Do you want to work at the heart of democracy?
We are looking to recruit an ambitious and enthusiastic individual to work in our Democratic Services & Scrutiny Secretariat, to complement and enhance our service, maintaining our expertise in this field. Could that be you?
This post plays a vital role in the management and delivery of all aspects of the Council's democratic processes and civic and ceremonial functions.
We are looking for someone with a wide experience of Committee administration within a democratic environment and working with Elected Members. An understanding of democratic processes, the Council’s constitution, administrative law and practice and Governance and Standards issues is necessary for this role, as is knowledge of the legislative and policy agenda facing local government. Management experience and an understanding of the school admission appeals and exclusions processes would be beneficial.
Tasks include management of the Members Services and Civic functions, Committee Servicing and Scrutiny work, ensuring it is carried out in accordance with statutory requirements as well as providing effective advice to members, officers and the public on the operation of democratic and scrutiny processes. The postholder will be involved with decision making at the very centre of the Council.
The postholder must be able to work in a professional and competent manner at all times responding to the pressures of normal day to day operations, ensuring the Council’s governance processes are adhered to and the Council meets its legal obligations.
Effective communication is key, as is the ability to prioritise and manage one’s own work. We are looking for a personable, committed, individual who is highly organised, who can work with minimal supervision, on their own initiative and meet tight deadlines. Whatever your background, excellent interpersonal and communication skills are a must.
The Democratic Services & Scrutiny Secretariat is part of Legal Services and Communications, a vital Support Service providing advice and expertise to the whole Council.
