With a budget of around £365m, three hospitals, and 5,500 staff, North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust provides hospital-based services to the population of Hartlepool, Stockton on Tees, and parts of East Durham and Sedgefield, as well as community, therapeutic, and screening to a wider population across Durham and Teesside.

The primary role of the Maternity Support Worker (MSW) is to assist, support, and work in collaboration with the midwife and the wider multidisciplinary team to provide a safe and holistic approach to women and family-centered care.
The midwife is ultimately responsible for the care of the mother and her new-born(s), and it is under the direct or indirect supervision of the midwife that the Midwifery Support Worker assists with and provides care following completion of any relevant or appropriate training. The successful employee will be provided with appropriate training for the clinical setting in which they are working. These settings will include, but are not limited to, antenatal/postnatal inpatient or outpatient care and transitional care.
The post holder is expected to undertake a set of defined competencies, including the ‘care certificate’. This certificate ensures the minimum standards for the role are met and can further be incorporated into a ‘skills passport’. Support will be given to employees to further develop their skills and explore pathways for progression where appropriate.
Main duties of the job
* Responsibly receive details of daily duties from the midwife, and use own discretion when prioritising care, under direction and supervision of the registered Midwife. Manage own caseload.
* Support women in their choice of infant feeding and have awareness of the options available, providing robust feeding plans and advice in line with local and national policy and guidance.
* Recognise and report any abnormal events or emergencies to the multidisciplinary team through the appropriate means, in a timely manner using the SBAR tool.
* Observe the overall wellbeing of the newborn and escalate any concerns to the named midwife or multi-professional team in a timely manner.
* Assist, perform, and plot serum bilirubin ratio (SBR) test and/or implementation of Jaundice Meter, following successful completion of appropriate competencies as directed by the midwife.
* Assist women with mobilisation following surgical procedures and removal of dressings or cannula under the direction of the midwife.
* Assist in the nutrition and hydration needs of women.
* Assist the midwife in the delivery of the women’s care, including the promotion of public health information. Signposting to women the local and national services available.
* Support women and their families with the transition to parenthood, including teaching parenting skills and promoting bonding.
* Support postnatal care of both mother and baby as appropriate.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
· Assists healthcare professionals
· Assess patients' conditions through basic observations and act accordingly
· Make judgements involving straightforward job-related facts or situations
· Able to recognise triggers on National Early Warning Scores including Maternity and Neonatal early warning scores and act accordingly
· Able to recognise the signs of the deteriorating patient and alert qualified staff accordingly
· Clerical duties associated with the efficient management of the outpatient and day assessment unit area, such as: pulling/checking/preparation of case notes/x-rays, stock maintenance/topping up, checking and maintaining stock levels, inputting data onto ICE, TrakCare, and Badgernet, and assisting the Ward Clerk and covering when needed.
· Be aware of health education and Public Health objectives such as breastfeeding, stop smoking, and stop alcohol in pregnancy.
