Great that you're thinking about a career with BSI Job Title: Global Product Testing Laboratory Manager (Loughborough) About the role: The Global Product Testing Laboratory Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day management of all aspects required to deliver an effective testing program for the Loughborough Laboratories, under ISO17025. The role will lead the entire testing teams at the location whilst ensuring relations are maintained upstream & downstream, both domestically & International, to support our client portfolio. This role is positioned to enable & guide rather than deliver. The role will require the individual to have knowledge and accountability over several deliverables as set out in the responsibilities below. Experience gained within a similar product certification/testing environment or experience within a manufacturing/production engineering environment is highly sought after. Responsibilities: Budget Adherence – Responsible for influencing the generation for yearly budgets through discussion with line management and the finance team. Set stretching targets to ensure growth, identify risks and opportunities during said build. Through management of the team and conversion of effective testing, deliver the agreed budget. Where this is deemed not possible escalate immediately to enable recovery planning. Margin Protection – Responsible for post sales protection of the margin through effective delivery of works & strong decision making on “operational spend”. Attend and react to month finance reviews. Immediately escalate when this is not possible. Quality – Responsible for the quality of testing & the production of any associated documentation that is used either internal or released to the client, demonstrating a “Right First time” approach. Management systems – Responsible for maintaining effective control of the operation under the framework of our management systems. Measured through the various internal and external audits throughout the year. Subcontractor/Partner labs – Manage the relationships with subcontractors & Partner Labs selected to support the operational delivery. Typical activities will include: Selection of appropriate Labs, remove when required, with support from the Procurement team, on board the labs, periodic reviews of the performance of the labs, possibly supported communication to critique performance & understand any adjustment of offering. Witness/Site/Client Acceptance Testing – Support the offsite assessments & testing globally, ensuring colleagues have the right training & arrangements afforded to them to complete the works. People Management – Team management is key to the effective delivery of testing and a critical task. Responsibility over operational effectiveness of staff, including; performance, competency, learning and development, succession planning, career progression. This will involve working with internal supporting training personnel & the Technical and Quality Manager to ensure there is a robust framework behind the offering and delivery of all training. Innovation – Support and drive the direction of the strategic. High attendance in all team workshops and strategic session, collaboration, structured challenge & where needed team delegation will be expected to shape the future. Health, Safety & Wellbeing – Health & Safety – Subdivision ownership of the health and safety framework as laid out in 45001. Active involvement or delegation of all key meetings and strategic activities in relation to the health and safety of your staff. Work directly & pragmatically with the HSE Manager where needed to resolve challenges that may affect the operational environment. Wellbeing – Build an environment that staff feel safe and valued. Ensure structured one2ones take place & gain feedback from your manager in relation to the current condition of the team. Actively engage the staff in social events outside of work on an agreed frequency, be mindful and escalate any large changes to the mood and work with line manager on the appropriate approach. Reporting - Responsible for managing & facilitating the “single” reporting ethos, to enable effective operational decision making. Work with the Hemel Hempstead location, up & down stream teams to ensure only one set of metrics are released. Process Control – Support the evolving efficiency of the labs through the Process Engineer, Business analysis & Technical & Quality manager to maximise efficiency in the labs. Support the quantification of all changes submit for delivery. Relationships – Own your relationship management: Internal – Foster relationships to generate the biggest impact when working with peers or stakeholder, both in BAU and improvement cycles. External – Manage client relationships to protect, the current workload, understand the direction of travel & possible future offering, mitigate attrition & gain feedback on delivery. To be successful in the role, you will have: An academic or technical qualification such as degree/HNC/HND Qualifications and/or equivalent industry experience within product certification/testing. Experience in running a Lab or other production type environment. Organised, efficient and methodical in approach, with high attention to detail. Demonstrated high level interpersonal skills with the proven ability to communicate and influence effectively at all levels. An excellent understanding of management systems certification, product certification and testing concepts and principles An excellent understanding of quality systems, philosophies and principles and internal auditing principles and practices An excellent knowledge of national and international developments in testing and certification standards. Excellent understanding of assessment techniques. A good knowledge of business principles and operating practices (commercial awareness). Proven track record and experience of managing projects successfully and its resources. Familiarity with office IT systems and their application to commercial and technical processes. Experience in monitoring budgets and maintaining cost control.
