Job Title: Lead Biomedical Scientist - Flow Cytometry
Lead the Flow Cytometry team within the Immunology Department. Undertake scientific duties in Flow Cytometry and provide a clinical technical service by performing routine and specialist analytical testing on a range of biological samples. Maintain and run specialist equipment up to a value of £1 million. Provide necessary training and supervision of Band 5 Biomedical Scientists, Trainee Biomedical Scientists, and support staff within your section.
Main Duties of the Job
* Manage a small team of biomedical scientists and trainee biomedical scientists, associate practitioners, and assistant technical officers.
* Facilitate the processing of samples and management of workload to meet turnaround times, prioritise urgent samples, and ensure timely communication back to clinicians.
* Work closely with other sections of the Combined Laboratories and with the clinical team consisting of Clinical Scientists and Consultant Immunologists.
* Perform a variety of technical procedures, ranging from highly specialised manual tests to the use of fully automated analysers, including maintenance and troubleshooting.
* Deal with telephone enquiries from clinicians regarding test results.
* Manage stock efficiently, process and scrutinise internal and external quality controls, and maintain documentation to ISO 15189:2012 standards.

Job Responsibilities
* Process biological samples, taking personal responsibility for the quality and authorisation of results used in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of disease.
* Demonstrate highly developed specialist scientific skills.
* Perform complex manual, semi-automated, and automated analytical techniques, ensuring prompt reporting of results.
* Provide complex information relating to test results, which may be sensitive in nature.
* Understand the pathology of disease in relation to results produced and their significance in authorising patient results.
* Plan and prioritise workload of Band 5 Biomedical Scientists, Trainee BMS, and support staff.
* Perform urgent analyses and report results to requesting clinicians as appropriate.
* Identify abnormal or unexpected results and ensure prompt reporting and follow-up.
* Request additional tests or samples to aid in diagnosis or treatment as necessary.
* Operate analytical equipment within your section, including troubleshooting and repairs of complex automated equipment.
* Participate in quality assurance programs and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
* Maintain ongoing specialist training and document knowledge in your Personal Professional Portfolio.
* Assist in the maintenance and compilation of workload statistics and continual quality improvement processes.
* Participate in training and supervision of Biomedical Scientists and support staff.
* Cover for senior staff and work independently when necessary.
* Carry out other duties commensurate with the post.
Person Specification
Knowledge & Experience
* Proven knowledge of the pathology of disease relating to Flow Cytometry analyses.
* Ability to perform all assays relevant to the Flow Cytometry section.
* Knowledge of the pathology of disease in all areas of the Immunology laboratory.
Qualifications
* BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences or a degree acceptable to the Institute of Biomedical Sciences and the Health and Care Professions Council.
* State registration with Health Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist.
* Willingness to undertake further study for career advancement.
* Excellent communication skills to deal with patients and staff at all levels with tact and diplomacy.
* Accuracy and precision in a busy environment.
* Good interpersonal skills and demonstrable experience with LIMS.
* Experience managing a section of a laboratory.

Salary: £37,338 to £44,962 a year (Per Annum Pro Rata)
