Trainee Clinical Scientist (Cardiology) - Scientist Training Programme

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our team at STSFT as a trainee in the field of Cardiac Science.
This full-time, fixed-term position will offer training in Cardiac Science with a sub-specialty interest in either cardiac rhythm management or cardiac imaging (echocardiography) within our busy department at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust over a period of 3 years.

Excellent training opportunities are offered within the Scientist Training Programme (STP) at STSFT, which is a national postgraduate training programme located in hospitals and health services throughout England.
This is a 3-year postgraduate programme, and successful candidates will be employed by South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust for the duration of their training.
Trainees are also enrolled for a fully funded part-time vocational master's degree in clinical science.
Main Duties of the Job
The main duties of a trainee healthcare scientist in the Scientist Training Programme (STP) encompass practical and theoretical learning within a healthcare setting, focusing on complex scientific and clinical roles, patient care, and contributing to innovation and improvements.
STP trainees undergo a structured training program to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to become newly qualified Clinical Scientists.
Person Specification
Experience
* Practical experience appropriate to the role and familiarity with a range of basic cardiac investigations.
Skills & Knowledge
* Able to undertake complex eye-hand coordination tasks.
* Highly developed coordination skills with good dexterity and hand-eye coordination for the performance of fine analytical techniques.
* IT literate.
* Understanding of the role of an Echocardiographer and Cardiac Rhythm Management in healthcare and disease and its application in a healthcare setting.
* A committed, in-depth interest in Echocardiography or Cardiac Rhythm Management and its application to direct clinical care of patients in a clinical environment.
* Knowledge acquired through study and experience to formulate appropriate advice and judgements, including clinical judgements involving facts or situations that impact on patients.
* Understanding of quality control and management assurance in a science or work-based context.
* Ability to develop proficiency in the performance of routine and complex techniques currently in use where they are training (ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures accurately).
* Able to identify problems associated with scientific equipment, inappropriate testing, incompatible results, and to investigate these, plan corrective action confirming appropriateness with senior colleagues and follow up.
* Ability to analyse and assess scientific, technical, and medical literature.
* Good IT skills and knowledge of common computing packages for word processing, spreadsheets, presentation packages, and databases.
* Ability to analyse complex information.
* Ability to work autonomously, coordinate, and prioritise.
Qualifications
* A 1st or 2:1 in Cardiac Physiology (PTP) or a relevant scientific subject (examples include Physiology, Pure or Applied Physics, Biology or Human Biology, or Sports Science (if significant scientific content)).
* Equivalent experience and appropriate underpinning knowledge and skills in cardiology - as evidenced for example by appropriate voluntary registration with the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists or Academy for Healthcare Science.
* A 2:2 honours degree in any subject PLUS a higher degree in a subject that is relevant to the specialism they wish to apply for.
* Willingness to learn the tests, roles, and responsibilities of a physiologist.
* ILS certification.

* Ability to explain analytical, scientific, and clinical aspects of the work to a variety of people including scientific colleagues, clinical professionals, service managers, and patients.
