Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen within Portsmouth Hospitals to join our busy Histopathology Department. We are looking to appoint an experienced senior Biomedical Scientist to lead our molecular referrals service and be a member of the histological dissection team. The candidate will need to be patient-focused, have a positive attitude and strong leadership skills to be successful at this role.
Main duties of the job
The department handles 43,000 histology requests per annum and comprises routine histology including a large dissection area with 4 rooms, routine and special staining, immunohistochemistry, and renal pathology. We are using Vantage, have gone live with some Digital Pathology and are working on implementing a new LIMS, WinPath Enterprise in the near future. The department is fully UKAS accredited.

Job description
Job responsibilities
1. To lead the molecular testing referrals service for the Histopathology department.
2. To be an active part of the BMS dissection team and assist in the training of others.
3. Assist in the provision of reliable and accurate analytical data for the Trust, in accordance with ISO15189 standards and to be responsible for the organisation and management of the section.
4. To act as part of the B7 Senior BMS team within Histopathology, providing senior level advice and support, helping to deputise for the Histopathology Operational Manager as required.
5. To participate in a monthly rota to Histopathology department on the main QAH site to attend quality, governance and health & safety meetings and provide a service update to line management.
6. To maintain all associated departmental records, invoicing and documentation related to Molecular Testing.
7. To ensure that all staff that work in the Molecular Testing service are fully trained and competent, and are aware of current policies and procedures regarding the molecular service.
8. To ensure that all staff are aware of current policies and procedures regarding Molecular Testing and Referrals.
9. To represent the department at meetings and updates involving Molecular Testing and Referrals.
10. To act as a liaison between the department and the Trust Research and Development team, advising on departmental involvement in clinical trials and research projects.
11. To function within a core team of senior Biomedical Scientists and participate in staff supervision, training, performance reviews and absence management.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
* MSc or equivalent in Biomedical Sciences or being working towards one.
* Registration with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC).
* Diploma of Expert Practice in Histological Dissection and evidence of regular dissection sessions.
* Specialist Portfolio in Cellular Pathology.
Desirable
* Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science.
Experience
Essential
* At least five years experience post-registration working in a Histopathology laboratory.
* Be able to demonstrate an advanced level of specialist knowledge of Molecular Testing for Histopathological material.
* Be able to demonstrate a broad level of specialist knowledge and practical experience including routine histology, immunocytochemistry, and frozen sectioning.
* Evidence of continuing professional development.
Desirable
* Evidence of leadership / supervisory responsibility.
* Experience of education and training.
