Our internationally renowned Cardiothoracic Directorate provides secondary and tertiary Cardiac and transplantation services to the North of England and beyond. The successful applicant will therefore be working at the cutting edge of Echocardiography with a department that has a strong emphasis on individual professional development.

Main duties of the job

The department is split over two sites, and successful applicants may be expected to rotate between sites. The department is BSE accredited and currently offers a physiologist-led valve clinic and is developing a physiologist-led bubble/contrast service.
Applicants must have relevant transthoracic Echocardiography experience and be British Society of Echocardiography Accredited with the ability to work independently in the performance and reporting of transthoracic Echocardiograms.
Job responsibilities
* Deliver a highly specialist clinical service in acquiring, interpreting, and reporting cardiac ultrasound images.
* Provide or assist in a broad range of specialist cardiac ultrasound investigations (including standard transthoracic, stress, contrast, CRT assessment and optimization, and transoesophageal studies) as an autonomous practitioner on a day-to-day basis.
* Work as an independent Cardiac Scientist to deliver a high standard of care to all patients, utilising evidence-based practice to optimise service provision.
* Train a wide variety of staff groups in the specialised techniques of diagnostic cardiac ultrasound.
* Be flexible in working within other areas as appropriate when service needs demand.
* Contribute to the delivery of training within the department.

Person Specification
Qualifications & Education
* BSc in Clinical Physiology, BSc in Healthcare Science (Cardiology), MSc in Healthcare Science with HCPC registration or working to Masters level in Cardiac Sciences, hold an equivalent qualification or have equivalent experience.
* State registration with the Academy of Healthcare Science (AHCS), Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (RCCP) or Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC).
* A postgraduate professional qualification in British Society of Echocardiography.
* Working to MSc level in Cardiac Science/Physiology (holding an equivalent qualification or with equivalent experience).
* Hold an accredited Immediate Life Support resuscitation certificate.
* Advanced Life Support Resuscitation Certificate.
* Training or mentorship qualification (TAQA, D32/33 or other).
Knowledge & Experience
* Highly specialised post-qualification experience as a Cardiac Physiologist within Echocardiography with evidence of continuing professional development and demonstrable competency.
* Teaching and assessing responsibilities, supporting development or acting as a sponsor for Healthcare Science Cardiac Practitioners who wish to progress into Cardiac Scientist roles.
* Proven continuing professional development within a specialist field of knowledge including skills such as:
* Advanced experience and highly specialist knowledge of all areas of cardiology, including all non-invasive procedures, haemodynamic assessments, and interventional cardiac cath-lab procedures.
* Expert knowledge of adult, paediatric, genetic and congenital conduction disorders, arrhythmias, and associated structural heart disease processes.
* Delivering training to Clinical Physiologists/Practitioners/Scientists and trainees up to MSc level.
* Expert level, independent reporting of complex structural disease processes with scientific expertise in performing and interpreting diagnostic transthoracic, transoesophageal, and associated Echocardiography procedures for in-patient, outpatient, and acute setting care within cardiac catheterisation labs and theatres.
* Operating a range of computerised systems when performing Echocardiograms and reporting results.
* Evidence of participation in practice, performing audits, involvement in research, and in-service development.
* Experience in a supervisory role.
* Experience and knowledge in all areas of non-invasive and invasive Cardiology.
Skills & Abilities
* Good interpersonal and communication skills.
