About the role
The Senior Development Scientist role is a 3-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Associateship funded by Innovate UK and awarded to Imperial College London. The successful applicant will be employed by Imperial and based full time at Orthox Ltd, a small University spin-out Company near Oxford. They will work with academic supervisors at Imperial and industrial supervisors at Orthox to translate and optimise Bouncy Bioglass implants towards clinical applications from technology developed in the group of Professor Julian Jones at Imperial.
What you would be doing
Objectives are to:
* Transfer materials and manufacturing know-how to Orthox.
* Implement process controls.
* Finalise implant design for an osteochondral repair product concept considered to be the largest market opportunity, worth an estimated $2bn annually.
The role involves learning the Bouncy Bioglass manufacture processes at Imperial, including preparation of raw materials, ink manufacture, and 3D scaffold printing and training Orthox staff in these. With Orthox, they will also install and validate equipment, and develop process controls and GMP compliant manufacture, enabling optimisation of prototype medical devices for mechanical, chemical and biocompatibility testing.
Research Duties:
* To interact with Prof. Julian Jones as formal academic supervisor and other research staff and students working in broad areas of relevance to the project.
* To be based full time at Orthox, with regular visits to Imperial and collaborators
* To interact with Dr Nick Skaer and Dr Robert Walker as formal supervisors at Orthox.
* To build project management activity
* To pursue personal development through training provided by the Innovate UK funds and KTP framework.
* To write progress reports and prepare results for publication and dissemination via journals, presentations and the web.
* To attend progress and management meetings as required.
* To perform other reasonable tasks related to the furtherance of the project aims.
* To provide general assistance from time to time with other research related activities.
* Carry out sol-gel synthesis of inorganic/organic hybrid inks for direct ink writing.
* Developing the printing method with a printer at Orthox
* Characterisation of materials
* Develop GMP manufacturing capabilities through equipment/process validation, development of process controls and development of GMP compliant manufacturing procedures (e.g. SOPs)
* To build regulatory understanding and contribute to the development of regulatory documentation relating to the technology/product development.
* Work well within a dynamic group of students and research associates.
What we are looking for
* Degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Biochemistry, or a similar relevant subject.
* A PhD (or equivalent) involving research in Materials Science, Organic/Synthetic Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Biochemistry or a similar a relevant field of research.
* A level (or equivalent) in Chemistry
* Working in a lab-based research environment
* Proven record of conducting independent research within a lab-based role including designing and carrying out experiments, analysing results and writing these up for presentation to a wider audience
* Working with inorganic/organic hybrid materials
* A sound understanding of organic and inorganic chemistry.
* Working with controlled/hazardous substances
* Working within a highly regulated/controlled industry e.g. medical/pharma
* Research and/or manufacture using direct ink writing.
* Presenting results at national/international conferences
* CAD design
