Job summary We are looking for an SLT who is excited by the opportunity to innovate and shape the development of a recently expanded service. You will be working closely with the Band 7 Speech and Language Therapist to support the roll-out, delivery and ongoing quality improvement of the SLT service which now offers both dysphagia and communication support to service users. Many transferrable skills and experiences from various clinical settings are relevant to this post. The role and remit of SLTs working in acute mental health settings is an evolving area of practice and so genuine interest and compassion for this client group, a willingness to learn and adaptability skills are highly valued qualities in a candidate. This role is varied and diverse. You will be working across older adult wards and nursing home settings, as well as in working age adult wards, including a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The inpatient wards are located at three sites (Michael Carlisle Centre, Longley Centre and Grenoside Grange). The nursing homes are situated in Chapeltown and Norton. Main duties of the job To undertake the assessment, diagnosis and management of clients on your caseload according to need, including the development and implementation of appropriate programmes of care for communication difficulties and dysphagia. To promote the Speech and Language Therapy role within multidisciplinary teams, contributing to the development of appropriate clinical and professional roles. To provide mentoring / clinical supervision to more junior Speech and Language Therapists and Speech and Language Therapy Assistants, and to be involved in induction of new staff. To provide clinical training and supervision for Speech and Language Therapy students on practice placement in the SHSC Trust. To provide advice/training to other professionals, patients, carers and families regarding the management and care of patients with communication and/or feeding and swallowing difficulties. The successful applicant will show genuine compassion for service-users and be able to build positive rapport and relationships, whilst maintaining professional boundaries. The successful applicant will also understand the value of building relationships with their colleagues - especially in the context of this role which spans multiple sites, wards and involves collaboration across clinical disciplines.
