Manage staff, equipment and resources in the operating theatre environment (including intensive care) to ensure the optimum effectiveness and efficiency, including liaison with other nursing areas and the continuation of the nursing within the wider health and social services team In addition to the standard role in theatre, the staff undertake advanced competency roles by: Working in all areas of the patient pathway including supporting the outpatient clinics, undertaking pre-operative assessment, providing initial recovery and continuing the care of the patient in follow up care, being able to effectively break difficult news, if necessary and ensuring that onward referral and follow up is made effectively Working with patients in additional areas such as casualty, minor injuries and fracture clinics, providing support for difficult to access phlebotomy and cannulation, recall and screening programmes Application of all casting, including initial back slabs, completion casts, re casts, splitting casts pre-flight; Undertaking the process of decontamination and then sterilisation of instruments for theatre and also the whole health service including providing a auditable quality assurance trail Provide interventions and treatment to the patient who has suffered major trauma and or is admitted to intensive care; Undertake aeromedical evacuations to out of the Islands (eg to Montevideo) with patients who have critical life-threatening conditions, whatever their age or condition Support the leadership and management of the nursing team to ensure the continuing quality nursing care Participate in the development of nursing practice within the overall health services framework and in the light of changed and changing patient needs and expectations and Falkland Islands resources Identify, update, implement and maintain agreed standards and systems of health and nursing care relevant to the Falkland Islands, underpinned with evidence-based appropriate policies and procedures Support the facilitation of the development of staff, their skills and potential to enable them to achieve the highest standards of patient care including supporting staff with expectations of performance including agreed objectives, monitoring capability and taking remedial action when required Maintain excellent communications and professional relationships with all Health and Social service staff and all other agencies that link with the nursing team in order to maintain and promote the optimal care of patients and residents Maintain own professional development in order to continue registration with the appropriate governing body and to develop own skills and act as a role model to nursing staff with clinical nursing skills that are highly developed to meet the needs of the highly diverse patients, including meeting the cultural, social, ethnic, and religious needs of the patients as necessary Ensure that the systems to support the nursing care are maintained and implemented, including patient records, both paper and electronic, staff records including documentation for recruitment, performance, collation of time sheets, leave etc, attendance at mandatory training, auditing and collation of statistics as required and to develop and implement other systems as relevant Undertake specific roles to develop the nursing and health services as allocated by the Chief Nursing Officer.
