An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse to join the team on our Elective Orthopaedic Wards at Cheltenham General Hospital. The area caters for patients admitted for a range of planned orthopaedic surgery and has recently introduced an ambulatory pathway facilitating day case arthroplasty surgery.
You will be part of a highly skilled and motivated multidisciplinary team that includes Health Care Assistants, Nurses and therapy staff who pride ourselves in our diversity, team work and attention to detail to providing excellent care for our patients
Main duties of the job
Lead the Nursing team in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of safe person centred Nursing care.
Manage the ward and admission area on a regular basis including managing the flow of patients through the wards.
Support in the expansion of the ambulatory arthroplasty and virtual ward pathways.
To support the manager in recruitment, retention and performance of staff and students.
To support the manager with budget control, including safe allocation of staff and sickness management.
Adhere to trust policies, procedures and professional code of conduct.

Job responsibilities
- Work as a member of the multidisciplinary team.
- Use leadership skills to supervise and manage others, contribute to planning, designing, delivering and improving future services.
- Have the ability to lead team in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care with the multidisciplinary team.
- To lead and deliver safe person-centred care. This will include the management of the ward and admission area on a regular basis including the effective use of beds/trollies.
- Ensure staff skill mix remains at an safe level, including use of electronic rostering and monitoring systems.
- To support the monitoring of patients on the virtual ward pathway including clinical input at daily meetings.
- To support the day one telephone follow up of daycase patients and those discharged under the ambulatory arthroplasty pathway.
- To administer medication and treatment within Procedure for the Ordering, Prescribing and Administration of Medical Guidelines.
- Participate in mentorship and educational programmes for students and other members of the team.
- Adhere to Trust policies, procedures and professional code of conduct.
- To support line manager in recruitment, retention and performance related issue with staff and students.
- Support ward manager in the management of budget control.
- To comply with relevant risk management strategies and processes.
Person Specification
Qualifications, Experience and Knowledge
* Active registration with the NMC as a Registered Nurse (Adult) or equivalent with substantial post registration experience
* Recognised assessor qualification
* Evidence of ongoing professional development
* Experience working in an acute surgical environment
* Experience of working within an orthopaedic speciality
* Recognised Nursing Degree or equivalent
* Bronze QI or willingness to work towards QI project
* Demonstrates knowledge and passion of practice development
* Awareness of importance of audit and research
