Important Information:
It is essential to visit a Magistrates' court prior to submitting your application to better understand the role and the work of a legal adviser in Magistrates’ Court.
You must declare any previous or pending prosecutions or convictions, including those considered “spent” under this Act. A criminal record does not necessarily mean you will fail vetting; each case is considered individually.
Part-time requests may be accommodated depending on business needs, with the expectation of working at least 3 days a week.
Role Overview:
The role of the legal adviser is vital to the smooth running of HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) and is a highly rewarding position. You’ll be surrounded by learning opportunities every day, so if you have a passion for law, this could be the right role for you.
You should be an excellent communicator with the ability to inspire confidence and the self-assurance to speak in court. You must have passed the academic stage of qualification to become a barrister or solicitor in England or Wales, or you’re a graduate member of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives.
Key Responsibilities:
As a trainee legal adviser, you will:
1. Provide magistrates with advice on points of law, practice, and procedure.
2. Assist with the formulation and drafting of the reasons behind judgments.
3. Help conduct case management hearings.
4. Liaise with outside agencies involved in specialist court work.
Once qualified, you’ll act as the professional face of the court, working with integrity, empathy, and understanding.
Qualifications:
At the time of application, you must be completing or have completed the academic stage of qualification to become a barrister or solicitor or a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEX).
Working Arrangements:
The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. All employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estate capacity.
