Summary:
The chemistry team develops new and improved products and processes. This person will ensure that processes are developed with scale and performance in mind. They will understand, improve, and validate processes, targeting effectiveness and scalability. They will transfer processes to the scale-up team, following its progress and supporting pilot-scale process development with lab-scale experiments when needed.
The person will contribute to Anaphite’s growth of know-how and IP with novel ideas & improvements. This person will also lead small programmes of work and supervise/mentor junior scientists when appropriate.
Responsibilities/Duties:
Technical responsibilities:
* Working with the lead process development chemist to scale up small-scale processes (100g) to small pilot (1 kg) scale and
* Developing and recording process know-how. Prepare documentation for process technology transfer within Anaphite or between Anaphite and customers or partners.
Project management responsibilities:
* Leading internal and commercial projects relating to development of process technology and
* Identify problems, solve problems, source materials or equipment where necessary to do so.
Contribution to IP:
* Keeping up to date with industry and research developments; applying knowledge both in own work and through mentoring of more junior team members and
* Submit or analyse Invention Disclosure Forms.
Setting high standards:
* Upholding and promoting excellent safety practices in the laboratory;
* Setting the standard for and upkeeping research and reporting standards and
* Representing Anaphite in external projects, conferences, to customers and prospective candidates.
Collaborative working:
* Keeping good lines of communication between colleagues and stakeholders through oral and written reports;
* Collaborate with early stage process discovery scientists in defining and developing commercially relevant process technology;
* Collaborate with the scale up team in ensure process development follows scale-up requirements;
* Collaborate with the Electrodes and Cells teams to communicate and understand changes to materials produced with developed processes and
* Contribute to the development of product specification documents and know-how, to ensure the correct knowledge transfer of technologies between teams and customers.
People management responsibilities:
* Line manage process chemists and/or junior process chemists when appropriate and
* Assist the Lead and Principal Scientists with recruitment when required.
Required Proficiencies/Experience:
Essential Criteria:
* Industrial experience of 3 years and above or relevant post-doc experience in a university;
* Process optimisation for products with predefined specifications;
* Involvement in scaling of complex chemical processes by a factor of at least 100;
* Proficiency in data handling and reporting using software packages (e.g. Microsoft Excel, Origin, Matlab);
* Polymer or protein chemistry, colloid chemistry, or similar type of science;
* Experience developing product and process characterisation methods, as well as process QC and
* Occasional travel for conferences.
Desirable Criteria:
* Project management/ Leading of work packages;
* Knowledge of battery materials, specifically for lithium ion batteries;
* Attending/ presenting at conferences and symposiums and
* Hands-on experience with or advanced knowledge of characterisation methods such as SEM, EDX, FTIR, UV/Vis, elemental analysis including ICP-OES, particle size characterisation methods, Karl Fisher titration, DSC, TGA
Salary/Benefits:
* Base Salary: £44,000 - £55,000 annually depending on experience;
