Job Description:
JOB PURPOSE
Under the direction of the class teacher/outreach teacher/Education Authority officer, assist with the educational support and the care of the pupil(s) with special educational needs who are in the teacher’s care in or outside the classroom.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The precise duties of the post will be determined by the principal/outreach teacher/Education Authority officer.
ADDITIONAL SPECIAL CLASSROOM SUPPORT (at least one of the three duties below should be carried out as a requirement of the post):
* Undertake more comprehensive or invasive medical/clinical procedures.
* Help pupils with specialist communication skills and/or sensory difficulties access the curriculum.
* Deal with pupils with very challenging behaviour as identified by the Educational Psychology Service as requiring additional provision.
SPECIAL CLASSROOM SUPPORT
* Assist the teacher with the support and care of pupils with special educational needs, e.g., enabling access to the curriculum, attending to personal needs including dietary, feeding, toileting, etc.
* Develop an understanding of the specific needs of the pupils to be supported.
* Assist with authorised programmes (e.g., Education Plan, Care Plan), participate in the evaluation of the support, and encourage pupil participation.
* Contribute to the inclusion of the pupil in mainstream classroom under the teacher's direction.
* Assist with operational and medical difficulties related to pupils' disabilities.
* Support in implementing behavioural management programmes as directed.
* Assist pupils in moving around school and on and off transport.
GENERAL CLASSROOM SUPPORT
* Assist pupils to learn effectively in group and individual settings by managing the learning environment, clarifying instructions, ensuring equipment use, motivating pupils, and promoting independence.
* Maintain confidentiality regarding home/pupil/teacher/school work issues.
* Establish supportive relationships with pupils.
* Prepare and produce resources for pupils and manage materials for play sessions.
* Supervise groups or individual pupils during activities, including ICT, extracurricular activities, etc.
* Assist with off-site activities following risk assessments.
* Supervise and support pupils during play, cloakroom, and toileting activities, including administering medicines and dealing with minor injuries.
* Ensure a safe environment for pupils.
* Report any signs or symptoms requiring immediate or expert attention.
ADMINISTRATION
* Assist with classroom administration and record-keeping of pupil progress.
* Provide feedback about pupils to the teacher.
* Help produce charts, displays, and process resources.
OTHER DUTIES
* Attend relevant training.
* Assist work placement students with practical tasks.
* Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal within the post's level.
