Description The Role As a Senior Energy Storage Consultant, you will be a technical expert with consulting background in utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). You will work on in-front and behind the meter utility-scale energy storage projects, for standalone and co-located systems. The projects you will lead advisory and owner’s engineering services, and you will be part of our Clean Energy Solutions team. You will provide specialist technical input to our teams and clients whilst also having an opportunity to manage a portfolio of due diligence and owner’s engineering assignments. Through a collaborative approach with multi-disciplinary teams, you will produce professional and detailed technical designs, reports or documents. Within the project delivery team, you will be the main focal point for the client for BESS related aspects, ensuring any challenges that arise are dealt with directly and developing strong relationships to play a part in the successful financing of the projects, and continued growth for the Clean Energy business. Responsibilities Typical responsibilities Leading BESS project developments, providing engineering inputs from initial assessment, through to technical and economic feasibility, development phase, technical due diligence, construction monitoring, acceptance and operation monitoring. Preparing, reviewing and supporting draft, Employer’s Requirements, fire and explosion risk assessments, pre-fire plans, technical reports and proposals. Providing procurement and contract negotiation technical support, preparing tender documentation, and supporting the tender evaluation process. Site visits in the UK and abroad. Providing technical support to other teams and clients regarding BESS industry best practices and technology. Technical assessment of BESS, including all relevant system components. Working with our solar PV, wind, green hydrogen and other technical teams to deliver energy storage and hybrid power projects. Acting as an interface and point of contact for clients, supporting the development of client relationships. Management of projects or tasks within projects, taking responsibility for technical, programme and budget performance. Expected: A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrochemistry, Process Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a relevant engineering field. Candidates that have completed a Ph.D. in similar areas are also welcome. Expertise delivering technical due diligence and owner’s engineering assignments for utility-scale BESS across the asset lifecycle. Strong advisory background, having experience providing consulting services to developers, lenders, investors, asset owners, route to market providers and vendors. Expertise performing design reviews of integrated BESS and assessing the appropriateness of battery technology, power conversion, thermal management, battery management, energy management, fire prevention, fire suppression, metering requirements, and SCADA system designs. Knowledge of the functioning of revenue streams available to BESS in the UK, with solid understanding of the technical requirements and design implications to enable their provision (knowledge of international markets would also be favourably considered). Aware and proactively tracking market developments in the UK, best industry practices and technology advancements in the energy storage sector, with a commercial mindset influencing and complementing provision of technical support and industry know-how (USA, Australia, or other European countries would also be favourable). Experience performing or reviewing fire and explosion risk assessments. Strong problem-solving and analytical skills. A flexible and proactive approach to project delivery. Previous project management experience. A confident communicator both verbally and written. Familiarity with applicable codes, standards and regulations in the UK, understanding their limitations and how to overcome them (USA, Australia, or other European countries would also be favourable). Desirable: Previous experience working in technical consulting company. Minimum of 5-8 years of experience in the areas of Lithium Battery Design, Testing, Manufacturing, Battery Integration and BESSs. Competence in reviewing and providing expert commentary regarding BESS contracts, warranties and performance guarantees. Familiarity with BESS technical inputs to financial models. Previous experience in the development, construction, commissioning and/or operation of BESS projects (both stand-alone and integrated with renewable energy solutions, behind and/or in-front of the meter). Previous experience with BESS test inspection, witnessing and verification of commissioning is favourable. Academic background in battery technology. Familiarity with BESS technical modelling and forecasting (e.g., usable energy output, cycling, performance analysis, degradation analysis and forecasting, revenue streams stacking, techno-economic optimisation, among others). Ability to speak another language in addition to English. Valid driving licence for use within UK.
