British Engines Group company, Michell Bearings, designs and manufactures hydrodynamic bearings for the marine, defence and industrial sectors.
Michell Bearings revolutionised ship building and sea transportation with the invention of the tilting pad bearing over 100 years ago and operates from sites in South Shields (UK), and Bangalore (India), with offices in the USA and Germany.
As a Design Engineer you will be responsible for generating bearing designs, as well as associated documentation in support of pre and post customer contracts. You will also be involved in Michell Bearings’ research and development activities.
What you’ll be doing
1. Create conceptual design work in support of bearing tenders, and detail design work for contracts and new product development
2. Produce and manage models and engineering drawings within the company’s computer aided design (CAD) systems
3. Perform bearing performance calculations using specific software
4. Perform structural strength of materials calculations to support bearing designs
5. Liaise with other departments, customers and suppliers in support of the above tasks
6. Prepare lists of parts that form the framework for a bill of materials
7. Generate and transfer the required departmental design documentation
8. Maintain component part records in the company database systems, as well as other documents required by business quality system processes
9. Create the most cost effective designs
Who we’re looking for
To apply, you must be educated to HNC level or equivalent in mechanical engineering with a strong background in mechanical design and the ability to demonstrate knowledge of strength of materials. We also ask that you have experience of designing castings, fabrications and precision machined, close-tolerance, turned and milled components. Familiarity of international standards or directives related to the design and testing of products for use in naval, nuclear and hazardous area applications would be beneficial.
We’re looking for someone who has excellent 3D CAD modelling and 2D technical drawing skills (preferably Creo or Pro/Engineer). An understanding of MathCAD, Windchill and Microsoft Office applications is desirable.
This position will be on a full time, permanent basis, working 37 hours a week onsite.
