About us
We make smart wristbands that can track hand gestures for interacting with virtual objects in extended reality (XR).
Our ambition is to make our smart wristbands the leading controllers for XR. Paired with XR headsets and glasses, these wristbands allow users to seamlessly interact with virtual and real-world objects.
Fether Labs is a fully-funded startup that spun out of Imperial College London. Our wristbands use a proprietary core technology developed in the Department of Bioengineering. We are a team of technical Co-Founders and are seeking our employee #1.
The Role
We are looking for a talented and ambitious Product Designer to lead the transformation of our wearable wristband prototype into a market-ready product. As we are in the beginning stages of our start-up, we see this role for someone who is driven and motivated to be an early player of this team.
This role will involve rapid design iterations and prototyping to ensure the device is not only functional but also comfortable, ergonomic, and visually appealing. As this product will be worn daily, achieving an aesthetic design is a key priority.
In addition to design responsibilities, the Product Designer will play a significant role in navigating the certification process, including CE marking for Europe and the US equivalent and contribute to the manufacturing pathway.
Key Responsibilities
* Translate our existing prototype into a commercial-grade wearable device.
* Lead the design process, focusing on performance, comfort, and aesthetics.
* Rapidly iterate through design and prototype cycles to refine the product.
* Integrate the hardware and software for a seamless user experience.
* Lead user testing by establishing channels for engaging with users.
* Collaborate closely with engineers, users, and stakeholders to ensure design feasibility.
* Manage certification processes (CE marking and FCC certification).
* Setup the manufacturing processes to bring the product to market.
* Engage in research and development activities to explore new products and product features.
Essentials (these are minimum requirements)
* Proven experience in designing and developing products
* Excellence in computer-aided design (CAD) software and rapid prototyping tools (eg, 3D printing, CNC machining, injection moulding)
* Strong portfolio demonstrating design of ergonomic and aesthetically pleasing products.
* Knowledge of materials, manufacturing techniques, Design for Manufacturing (DFM).
* Passion for creating beautiful, functional products that people love to wear and use.
* Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
* Strong communication and project management abilities.
* Flexibility to take on many different roles, as needed in a fast-growth startup company.
Desirables (we do not expect you to have all of these)
* Have previously delivered a product to the market with great success
* Have been critical to receiving CE marking and/or FCC certification for their product.
* Excellence in analogue circuit design and manufacturing and integrating digital microcontrollers.
What We Offer:
* The opportunity to lead product design in a fast-growing tech startup.
* We have invented a proprietary sensor that you, as a product designer, will have exclusive access to build products for.
* Exposure to the full product lifecycle, from concept to manufacturing.
* £45,000 to £50,000 for the 1-year contract.
