Teaching Assistant (Autism)
Location: Neath
Salary: £12.90 per day
Contract Type: Full-time (temporary)
Working Hours: Monday to Friday (no weekends)
Teaching Personnel are currently recruiting for a Teaching Assistant to work with autistic children, in one of our partner secondary schools in Neath. The school offers specialist support for children with low functioning autism.
Role Overview:
As a Teaching Assistant for autistic children, you will work directly with students on the autism spectrum to support their learning, development, and well-being. You will be an integral part of the classroom team, assisting the teacher in providing tailored, inclusive support that helps students thrive in an environment where they feel valued and understood. Your role will also involve helping students develop key social, emotional, and academic skills, ensuring they are supported to engage with their peers and the curriculum.
Key Responsibilities:
* Provide 1:1 support for autistic students, helping them engage with lessons, complete tasks, and develop their communication and social skills.
* Assist in creating and implementing individual learning plans (ILPs) to meet the specific needs of autistic students.
* Adapt and modify classroom resources and activities to ensure accessibility and engagement for all students.
* Support students in social situations, helping them to interact with peers and develop their social skills.
* Promote a positive and inclusive learning environment where students feel safe, understood, and respected.
* Work closely with the class teacher, ALNCO (Additional Learning Needs Coordinator), and other professionals to monitor progress and review strategies.
* Provide emotional and behavioural support as needed, helping students to regulate and cope with challenging situations.
* Assist with the personal care and well-being of students when necessary.
Key Requirements:
* Experience working with children, particularly those with Autism Spectrum Disorder, is desirable but not essential.
* Knowledge of autism and the strategies used to support students with ASD is an advantage.
* A patient, empathetic, and flexible approach with the ability to build positive and trusting relationships with students.
* Strong communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with students, teachers, and parents.
* Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and support the wider school community.
* Relevant qualifications (e.g., Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent) are desirable.
* A commitment to continuous professional development and a genuine passion for supporting autistic students.
