Short term role · 4 hrs/Week · Starting from 25 Apr 2022
Hitchin, Hertfordshire, England, United Kingdom
Summary
Assist Education lead in regular summer 2-hour sessions about bees and pollinators for children aged 5-11. Possibility to join the monthly planning team.
Detailed description
Inspire children to learn and care about how important honeybees and other pollinators are in our beautiful natural world. Enthusiasm and rapport with young children are more important than formal qualifications. Knowledge of honey bees and other pollinators is ideal, and willingness to learn is essential. A typical 2-hour session could include making a collage to learn about the amazing body of the honeybee; watching bees at work in our observation hive and small apiary; and a pollination game in our lovely pollinator-friendly garden.
Our Discovery Centre is a fully resourced classroom-sized outbuilding with an indoor observation hive and views into our small apiary, set in a lovely garden. Lesson plans are available, but new ideas are always welcome. You would join a small friendly team offering teaching, resourcing, and admin support.
We are hoping to run fortnightly sessions for schools, home education groups, and uniformed groups through May to August, depending on the availability of volunteers.
We usually allow an hour for set-up and an hour for clear-up, plus a couple of hours for planning. Our visits get very positive feedback as we offer an exciting hands-on experience not possible in a traditional classroom setting.
Getting there
Our Discovery Centre is at the back of the allotments off Old Hale Way in Hitchin. We host visits to our BuzzWorks Discovery Centre, where you can enjoy the bee-friendly garden, bee exhibition, and watch the bees at work.
We also support local beekeepers and provide training courses for new and improver beekeepers at our larger Honeyworks Beekeeping Centre, off Burford Way, Hitchin.
You can find us at the Hitchin Farmers Market on the last Saturday of every month. Come along for a chat and buy some pure local honey. Or contact us via our website. See more opportunities by Buzzworks Association Hitchin.
