Job overview
University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a skilled Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with a specialist interest in Head and Neck Oncology, including Micro-Vascular Surgery. This is an exciting opportunity to join a friendly multidisciplinary team delivering high-quality, patient-focused care across Dorset.
This role supports the Trust’s vision for transforming healthcare through the Dorset Clinical Service Review. The successful candidate will contribute to the integration and reconfiguration of emergency and elective care pathways, enhancing service delivery across multiple sites.
The OMFS department serves the population of Dorset, providing a full range of services, including:
1. Head and Neck Oncology: Management of cancers, including sentinel lymph node procedures for melanoma.
2. Trauma and Reconstruction: Management of complex facial injuries.
3. Orthognathic Surgery: Correction of facial deformities.
4. Dentoalveolar Surgery and Oral Medicine: Including the management of chronic facial pain.
5. Head and Neck Melanoma Services: Delivered at Dorset County Hospital (DCH) and University Hospitals Dorset (UHD).
The service is fully integrated with multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) and supported by cutting-edge facilities, including 3D software, reconstruction technologies, and a milling machine.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will manage a varied clinical workload, encompassing inpatient and outpatient care, theatre sessions, and multidisciplinary meetings, with a focus on head and neck oncology and reconstructive microvascular procedures. They will also participate in the emergency on-call rota ensuring comprehensive care for urgent and emergency OMFS cases, including microvascular and general surgery needs.
In addition to clinical responsibilities, the appointee will actively participate in teaching, training, and research initiatives. Opportunities include mentoring junior staff, teaching medical students, and collaborating with Bournemouth University to further educational and research objectives.
Candidates need to demonstrate broad experience in OMFS including head and neck oncology, the management of adult OMFS patients as well as excellent clinical skills and experience of clinical governance.
We are looking for someone who enhances our multidisciplinary team, building effective working relationships amongst all colleagues from all professions, with the desire to continue to build on their organisational and leadership skills. Experience of change management is advantageous.
