Working hours: 36 Hours Mon – Fri (Fri 12.30 pm finish)
We're recruiting an experienced Senior SQL Database Administrator to join our Database Administration Team in our IT department, based at our Doxford Park, Sunderland head office. In this key role, you will provision, maintain, and secure our back-end database systems, ensuring our dedicated colleagues can support over 60,000 tenants across Sunderland.
Our hybrid working arrangement offers a blend of home and office work. You'll be required to work in the office for part of the week, to ensure you are part of our collaborative team culture. We also need you to be flexible to attend the office for on-site meetings as needed. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer remote working for this position.
The role of Senior SQL Database Administrator requires experience in:
1. Database management systems (design, implementation, maintenance, and performance optimisation)
2. Data modelling, high availability and awareness of integration technologies to ensure the seamless flow of data across disparate systems.
3. Collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure the reliability, security and scalability of the database infrastructure.
The role is subject to a basic DBS paid for by Gentoo.
Key responsibilities will include the following:
1. High Availability and Disaster Recovery: Configure and maintain high availability solutions such as SQL Server Always On Availability Groups, database mirroring, and clustering to minimise downtime and ensure business continuity. Develop and test database backup and recovery procedures to recover data in the event of system failures, disasters, or data corruption.
2. Performance Optimisation: Identify and address performance bottlenecks, query optimisation opportunities, and scalability challenges in database systems and integration processes. Monitor system performance metrics and fine-tune configurations for optimal throughput and responsiveness.
3. Development: Support the development of integration solutions to facilitate data exchange between different systems, applications, and platforms. Actively contribute to improvements and migrations both with on-premises and cloud technologies.
4. Version Control and Documentation: Manage database scripts, schema changes, and integration code using version control systems. Maintain documentation of database designs, integration workflows, and system configurations, following best practices for knowledge sharing and compliance purposes.
5. Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including software developers, system administrators, data analysts, and business stakeholders, to understand requirements and deliver database-related initiatives. Communicate effectively to gather feedback, provide updates, and address concerns.
6. Troubleshooting and Support: Provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance to resolve database-related issues, integration failures, and data discrepancies. Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to prevent re-occurrence.
It is essential you have the following:
1. Proven experience in Database Administration and data engineering roles.
2. Proven experience with database backup and recovery processes and High Availability.
3. Experience with ETL tools and processes (e.g., Informatica, Talend, SSIS, Azure Data Factory).
4. Experience with version control systems (GitHub, Bitbucket).
5. Experience working in IT, including experience delivering 2nd or 3rd-line support.
6. Experience with writing, maintaining and troubleshooting procedural Transact SQL (TSQL).
7. Communication skills developed in a similar role, with the ability to convey ideas and complex concepts understandably, written and verbal.
8. The proven ability to work across cross-functional teams with a collaborative approach.
9. A methodical and pragmatic approach to problem-solving and troubleshooting.
It is highly desirable you have the following:
1. Open-Source RDBMS such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB.
2. Experience with the Redgate Suite of tools (Backup Pro, SQL Monitor, SQL Toolbelt).
