Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join our apprenticeship programme and train to become a Biomedical Scientist.
Upon graduation, we strive to have opportunities within the business for you to move into a permanent qualified biomedical scientist position.
The starting salary will be £24,600 with all university tuition fees paid for by the organisation.
NOTE: According to the apprenticeship funding rules, if you do not have a British passport, your visa must be valid for the duration of the 4 years. If your visa expires before the apprenticeship ends, you would not be eligible for the apprenticeship.
NOTE: This apprenticeship is not suitable for those that already hold a degree in Biomedical Science or are already HCPC registered as Biomedical Scientist.
Main duties of the job
You will join the organisation as an apprentice trainee biomedical scientist. During the period of 4 years, you will complete a part-time IBMS (Institute of Biomedical Science) accredited BSc Hons Applied Biomedical Science degree whilst working in one of our pathology laboratories. You will be supported through a comprehensive training programme to gradually build up your knowledge and skill set to achieve HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) registration as a Biomedical Scientist via completion of the IBMS Registration Portfolio.

Job responsibilities
MAIN DUTIES: To include, but not be restricted to, the following duties:
1. To carry out Pathology investigations of patient samples under supervision as requested by the Clinical Services.
2. To operate and assist in maintenance of laboratory equipment according to departmental and manufacturers protocols and procedures.
3. To ensure agreed standards for turnaround times of samples and results are met.
4. To follow departmental operating procedures for Pathology analyses and undertake proper maintenance of equipment used.
5. To ensure work is completed and a handover is communicated prior to leaving a section.
6. To inform the senior staff or requesting clinician of abnormal results.
7. To maintain confidentiality at all times.
8. To become familiar with and proficient in the use of the information technology systems within the Department.

Qualifications
Essential
* Appropriate qualifications to ensure acceptance onto the IBMS accredited Biomedical Science degree programme e.g. A levels BBC to ABB (112 to 128 UCAS Tariff points) to include two science subjects from Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Maths.
* Level 2 standard in English and Maths.
