General Manager - SURGICAL DIVISION: Band 8B
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a passionate, hard-working and experienced senior operational manager to take on a General Manager role within the surgery division at the Royal Surrey Foundation Trust.
Applicants should have strong interpersonal skills, ability to work under pressure delivering short-term priorities, long-term goals, as well as working on a range of projects within a specialty and across the division.
We are ambitious and growing; exemplified by the fact that we are currently in the development phase for the build of a brand new surgery complex, which will include significantly enhanced operating theatre capacity.
Main Duties of the Job
This role provides direct senior support to the Head of Service. This role is responsible for providing operational management to one specialty service within the Division of Surgery as well as taking on key responsibilities across the division as directed by the Head of Service and ADO.
The successful candidate needs to have demonstrable experience as an existing specialty or service manager, with knowledge of national and local performance targets. They will work closely with large, successful administration and clinical teams to drive forward change and further establish the excellent outcomes that the trust prides itself on.

Job Responsibilities
The General Manager is jointly responsible with the Clinical Director and Matron for leading and managing a major area of activity within the Division, leading staff to provide a quality service, which is efficient, stays within financial constraints and provides high levels of user satisfaction. The General Manager will provide effective strategic and operational management to the Strategic Business Unit (SBU), ensuring the delivery of high quality patient services within the resources available.
The General Manager with the Clinical Director and Matron will provide leadership and direction to the service. A core function is to develop and manage the activity plans for the SBU ensuring that service pathways and capacity and demand analysis is understood to ensure delivery. This will include playing a key role in identifying opportunities for clinical innovation and modernization, the delivery of all operational performance targets, waiting list and financial management, bed utilization and management. Continually improving the quality of services to patients and redesigning services to meet best practice standards, improving efficiency and effectiveness and available resources.
The post-holder will provide support to the Divisional triumvirate and other specialty managers in areas of particular focus such as cancer, waiting time performance, the elective recovery, PALS and complaints as requested by the Divisional triumvirate or Head of Service.
Working with the Clinical Director and Matron provide leadership to the SBU to ensure the effective delivery of clinical and non-clinical services;
Lead the development of the SBUs strategic direction in line with Portfolios overall strategy and ensuring that all strategic plans are incorporated into service plans and objectives for all staff;
Develop short, medium and long-term objectives, which are turned into effective, affordable and achievable annual service plans for the SBU and the portfolio, and deliver these plans within the financial resources available;
Develop a culture within the SBU/s in which all staff are delivering high quality patient-centered clinical and support services;
Formulate new service development initiatives, ensuring business cases are produced, taking into account trust governance and standing financial instruction, activity and income projections;
Review and redesign services to meet the needs of patients and enable the SBU to achieve its key performance indicators;
Lead the planning of future capital developments for the SBU/s to deliver improved facilities for patients, ensuring that developments are designed around the service;
Develop robust mechanisms to ensure clear communication of service plans, objectives and service changes within the SBU ensuring that staff are engaged directly in any review and development of services;
Lead and support in projects with a divisional focus as well as SBU specific work.

Qualifications
Essential:
* Masters Degree or equivalent professional qualification or level of experience

* Diploma or health care related post grad degree

* Current changes and developments within the NHS
* Change management theory
Desirable:
* Previous experience of managing complex services
