Introduction
A personal assistant is sought for a service user has recently returned home to his smallholding from hospital following a stroke which has caused one-sided weakness and difficulty with speech. He is currently reliant on a wheelchair and assistance with transfers from a chair, wheelchair, bed and car. Training will be provided for use of equipment and transfers.
Support is initially required to get out of the house and onto the yard to see the horses and chat to his friends, neighbours, and horse owners. He enjoys being in the countryside and going for a stroll in his wheelchair around the lanes. When in home, support is required with the laptop to access on-line social network sites such as YouTube. Besides the main area of interest being around horses, the service user is interested in motorcycles.
Later aspirations are to go out into the local community, for example, visit the promenade and enjoy having fish, chips and coffee. If going out, personal care may be required with toileting which involves undressing, cleaning and redressing.
Main Duties
Support to get out of the house and onto the yard. The service user currently has a manual wheelchair and will require support/supervision, especially when a powered wheelchair is acquired.
Accompany service user on walks around the lanes to see the countryside in the local vicinity.
Accompany to go out to socialise, attend local groups and activities. A wheelchair accessible taxi is used to go out away from home.
Accompany to go to rehab appointments outside of the home.
Support with using the laptop to access on-line socialisation opportunities. Set up laptop to enable access to online speech and language therapy sessions.

Good communication and inter-personal skills, the service user has aphasia and so time and patience is needed to enable and encourage him to communicate his wishes.
Welsh speaker is desirable, but not essential, as service user’s first language is Welsh.

If requested by the employer, two satisfactory references must be provided. This post is subject to a trial period of 1 month and a probationary period of up to 6 months.
Wages will be paid in arrears on a 4 weekly basis once a valid National Insurance (NI) number has been provided. You must be eligible to work in the UK and your employer will conduct document checks prior to commencement.
You will receive the appropriate annual leave entitlement as well as all other statutory entitlements, details of which will be set out in your contract of employment. You will also be issued with a Personal Assistants Handbook when your employment commences.
You will be expected to undertake any mandatory training identified as relevant to this post. The cost of mandatory training will be met through the direct payment. Failure to attend mandatory training may result in your employment offer being withdrawn.
