This exciting new role within BTO’s Engagement Department will be responsible for delivering a targeted programme of community engagement aimed at inspiring people to notice and care about the wildlife that uses the UK’s greenspaces. We particularly want to reach those living and working within urban environments and people and groups who have been traditionally underserved by the environment sector. The British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) is developing an exciting new project aimed at improving our understanding of the importance of greenspaces for UK bird populations, and to get as many people as possible involved. ‘Birds in Greenspaces’ will launch in 2026 and will encourage volunteers to record the birds using their local greenspace, whether a park, playing field, or cemetery. This information will then be used to produce guidance that will help those responsible for greenspaces to make them the best they can be for nature and people. As part of the Training team, you will work closely with the Birds in Greenspaces Survey Organiser as well as colleagues in our Communications, Country Operations, Youth and Garden Birdwatch teams. You will explore all opportunities to make this project as inclusive and impactful as possible. You will be an inspiring communicator who is passionate about nature and can bring great ideas and proven success in engaging with urban audiences. You will need to be self-motivated, highly organised, and have excellent interpersonal skills. This position is based at our HQ in Thetford, although you will be able to work from home part of the time on a hybrid working regime and flexible start and finish times can also be accommodated to ensure a flexible work-life balance. The role at times may require some unsocial hours, evening and weekend working (with time off in lieu). This is a full time, fixed term contract for 18 months initially, with the potential for it to be extended.
