Job Details: Graduate Engineer / Engineer

Claxton is currently looking to hire a Graduate Engineer / Engineer to join the team on a full-time, permanent basis. Based in Westhill, we are looking for a creative engineer to develop tooling and technology solutions to support a wide range of energy industry projects and contribute to new product development. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing tooling detail designs, drawings, concept development, new product development, calculations, FEA and control of the design elements associated with the project and product development.
The role will allow the individual to build knowledge and develop creative solutions for a range of tooling and operational services in support of oil and gas and renewable energy assets from the structure’s installation phase through to asset decommissioning and it shall have an opportunity to involve from concept through to operational phase of product/tooling designed.
The work will predominately be office-based in the Aberdeen area. However, when required local, national, and international travel may be requested at short notice. The employee may also be asked to attend offices and work sites both on and offshore in support of product and project delivery and operations.
Under the direction and mentoring of the engineering team:
1. Assess design brief to produce the best design solution to the project requirements, considering timescale, cost, safety, current client, and industry standards.
2. Look for opportunities to integrate products from within the group to achieve said solution and offer external product solutions to complete project brief.
3. Perform design work to produce required project documentation, drawings, calculations, procedures, reports etc.
4. Generate FDS (functional design specification) and TS (technical specification) for products and projects.
5. Input and manage the design elements of projects including design output, manufacture, QA, 3rd party verification/validation with respect to the technical, timeframe and commercial considerations.
6. Create designs and perform design verification (FEA, hand calculations) in support of key projects and products.
7. Create designs and drawings for manufacture, client review, quotation, and in-house marketing as required.
8. Manage the design elements of projects and products in accordance with Claxton Management System.
9. Provide design-related input into kick-off, design review, project planning and other meetings.
10. Provide details of the validation testing and inspection requirements of designs.
11. Support validation testing and commissioning activities as required, and provide support to field operations and site integration tests for the project/product as required.
12. Maintain electronic media and hardware in accordance with Claxton Management System.
13. Check engineering output produced by other team members and provide support to senior team members as required.
14. Management of change on designs, documents, and drawings in accordance with company procedures.
15. Highlight and resolve any design issues following verification calculations and analysis with the help of a senior team member.
16. Conduct and document design review meetings and closeout actions.
17. Attend client meetings alongside more senior engineers as required.
18. Attend testing and/or installation of company equipment offsite alongside more senior engineers as required.
19. Support the collation of bid information for the composition of tender documents.
20. Maintain a working knowledge of other group operating companies to explore opportunities to combine technologies or services.
21. Work towards chartership with a recognised institution (IMechE, IET), maintaining a professional development logbook and working with a mentor to develop quarterly and annual goals towards meeting engineering council competency requirements for a chartered engineer.
Required:
1. MEng or equivalent in Mechanical, Mechanical and Electrical or Mechatronics engineering (a combination of BEng/BSc and practical experience will be considered).
2. 1-2 years of experience working in a mechanical tooling design environment, ROV/subsea tooling experience shall be advantageous.
3. Ability to use SolidWorks (or other 3D CAD package) and 2D CAD, to create detailed models & drawings in support of projects and products.
4. Strong knowledge of machine design elements, strength of materials, and use of Mathcad and FEA principles to perform design verification using first principles.
5. Commitment to work towards chartership with a recognised body.
6. Practical mechanical experience through previous work roles or hobbies shall be advantageous.
