Deputy Manager
Key Purpose of the job: Promote quality care and learning
1. To work as a support to the Directors and Manager in maintaining high quality, flexible childcare.
2. To support the smooth running of the setting on a day to day basis.
3. To promote the aims of the Nursery and embrace the ethos under which it operates - a child centred approach and an environment which is warm, welcoming and stimulating to all.
4. To work closely with the leadership team in driving forward continuous improvement.
Support for setting:
1. To be an effective member of the management team and contribute to the strategic planning, monitoring, evaluating and development of the nursery.
2. To develop an understanding of statutory requirements together with knowledge around effective practice.
3. To support the monitoring of staff absence management.
4. To support the manager in opening and locking the nursery.
5. To carry out show rounds when requested.
6. To support the manager with debt collection.
7. To support the manager with keeping the training folder up to date claiming for the courses accordingly, monitoring acceptance letters, informing the nursery diary of events and also monitoring monies received in accordance with the claims.
8. To support the completion of rotas weekly and ensure children are charged accordingly and that all Fee sheets are kept up to date.
9. Registers and Ratio checks.
10. Assist the rooms ensuring ratios are correct and offer help/advice/guidance where necessary.
11. Liase closely, building up a partnership and ensuring thorough communication throughout the day.
12. Participate in fundraising events each year.
13. End of Day duties checking final standards within the rooms, challenging mistakes and leaving notes for the appropriate person as required. Ensuring preparation, care, cleanliness and maintenance of the nursery playrooms and equipment.
14. To support the wellbeing of the children, families and practitioners within the setting.
15. To support the whole staff team to consistently meet the individual needs of the children and their families through providing play and learning opportunities and maintaining high standards of quality care and educational provision.
16. To support staff in creating and maintaining a purposeful environment which supports the delivery of play and learning experiences for all children attending the setting.
17. To provide support to the staff team, guiding them, and helping them increase their skills and confidence.
18. To ensure the nursery is equipped with suitable high quality materials which enhance the children’s play spaces appropriately.
19. To be a role model at all times to children, families, fellow practitioners, students and those from the local community.
20. Ensuring effective staff standards are maintained addressing any issues with staff immediately.
21. To contribute to the supervision, observation and appraisal process.
22. To attend staff meetings and training programmes in order to fulfil the role with up to date knowledge.
23. To provide regular feedback to the directors and managers.
24. To contribute to Self-evaluation, reviewing and reflection on practices on a regular basis.
25. To promote, attend and represent the nursery brand at functions and on training courses.
26. To receive and deal with complaints in a positive and efficient manner.
27. Welcoming environment - ensuring a strict open door policy is adhered to and encourage a close relationship between yourself and parents.
28. Supporting the induction of new staff, students and apprenticeships. Promoting a healthy work culture.
29. Constantly ensure the general standards of the nursery are high and rewarding good practice accordingly.
30. Any other duties appropriate to the post as directed by the nursery proprietor or Directors.
Support for parents and carers:
1. To work in partnership with children, parents, carers, other staff and organisations in the best interests of children and families by supporting the nurturing of positive relationships between parents, carers and children.
2. Ensure every avenue is exploited to ensure they feel welcomed and valued within the setting. Ensure each individual need is met and every parent’s requests are fulfilled.
3. Supporting the settling in and transition periods closely ensuring continuity for all.
4. Confidently develop trusting, honest relationships with parents, sharing information about the day’s activities, promoting parental involvement.
5. Foster respectful relationships and keep them updated on the child’s progress or highlight any concerns.
6. Talk with parents on a daily basis, keeping a strong rapport with all family members and work to foster good relationships.
7. This professional partnership with parents follows with other agencies and organisations.
8. To hold an adaptable and non-judgmental manner and to develop positive relationships with all and ensure practitioners working under you adopt the same professionalism.
9. To support the development of parental training and advocate the development of involvement of parents within the nursery.
Support for the Early Years Foundation Stage:
1. To work under the EYFS guidelines and have detailed knowledge of the EYFS.
2. To be responsible for ensuring that the children’s environment is safe and hygienic and adhere to Health and Safety requirements.
3. To consult the ‘Every Child Matters’ framework.
4. To have a detailed understanding of Ofsted and their standards and requirements.
5. Report any areas of concern regarding Children’s Welfare to the Nominated Officer, adhering to Child Protection procedures.
To ensure that all services delivered are of the highest quality by:
1. To work closely with the manager and the directors. You are expected to work autonomously throughout the day.
2. The role will require you to make day to day decisions thoughtfully and with a high degree of sensitivity to the needs of the children and families.
3. You will be required to make recommendations and proposals about the service available at the setting to make appropriate changes and developments.
4. To work in a flexible and enthusiastic manner, being professional and fair to all.
5. To maintain good communication systems within the service to be able to inform, inspire and motivate children, staff and to provide feedback to other professionals and parents.
6. To support the development of staff, students and trainees.
7. To keep up-to-date on the latest changes and research that supports young children’s holistic development.
8. The ability to develop ability to communicate with staff well and empower an effective team.
9. Show a commitment to ‘families know best’ when it comes to their own children.
10. To assess risks and prioritise the safety of children and staff at all times.
Additional Information:
1. Compliance with policies of the nursery. Contributing towards the development and implementing agreed policies, procedures and good practice guidelines in all areas of work - contributing to our overall ethos.
2. Contributing to the review, evaluation and development of the service offered and contributing to the development of good practice within the service.
3. Assist by reporting to their Manager any hazard, accident, damage or defect in order that remedial action may be undertaken.
4. Undergo and attend training which will enable you to work competently and safely.
5. Keeping up to date with changes in the curriculum and developments in best practice.
6. Attending training and undertaking professional development activity as identified by the supervision and appraisal process.
7. Be flexible with regards to working and covering extra shifts.
8. Act as an ambassador for the nursery and behave appropriately when in work uniform.
9. Any other duties appropriate to the post as directed by the nursery proprietor or Directors and to undertake additional duties as required, commensurate with the level of the job.

* A Level 3 Early Years qualification (or equivalent).
* Previous experience in a nursery or early years setting, ideally with supervisory or management experience.
* Knowledge of Ofsted requirements and safeguarding regulations.
* Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
* Passion for working with children and supporting their development.
