Our Investment DB Business Unit acts as a key component of our consulting services and helps firmly establish us as a UK market leader in this area. We currently advise on over £200 billion of assets for our diverse client base, which includes DB pension trustees and sponsors across a wide variety of business and industry sectors, local government pension schemes (LGPS) and other public sector clients.
We have an exciting opportunity to join this Business Unit as an Investment Consultant to focus on supporting our LGPS clients.
What will your role look like?
In this role you will be a key member of the Investment DB Business Unit. Day to day your role will involve conducting high quality research analysis and communicating investment advice from this to a wide range of clients, predominately focusing on our LGPS clients.
You’ll review and sign off investment advice on a wide range of topics including investment strategy, structure, investment markets, risk management, asset managers, responsible investment and governance.
Though this is a varied role, your key tasks will include:
1. Directing and advising a portfolio of predominantly LGPS clients on a range of investment matters
2. Delivering high quality, expert investment advice by employing strategic and innovative solutions
3. Being actively involvement in developing business for the firm, through client ‘prospecting’, relationship building and supporting new business pitches; working with other areas of the firm to facilitate ‘cross-selling’
4. Undertaking activities to build and enhance your Business Unit and firm’s profile – including networking and speaking at relevant conferences
5. Developing the consulting capabilities of the practice by coaching and mentoring junior team members including investment analysts within our client teams
6. Contributing to internal initiatives, such as Quality Assurance and Learning and Development programmes
To enjoy and succeed in this role, you will:
7. Have previous experience of working within a similar role in a consultancy environment, fund management or other relevant investment sector with some exposure to working with LGPS clients
8. Be FFA/CFA qualified (or be close to achieving this), preferably being authorised to give investment advice by the FCA (either following one of these qualification paths or having an alternative qualification/experience)
9. Be able to showcase strong commercial awareness of the pensions and employee benefits market, and will enjoy keeping up to date with topical matters arising within the UK Pensions Market
10. Bring experience of consulting with clients on responsible investment issues (as part of your broader consulting experience) with some knowledge of collective investment vehicles
11. Have detailed understanding of the major asset classes used in UK Pension Scheme Strategies and the legislative framework for UK pension schemes
12. Have exceptional communication skills, demonstrated through your ability to consult and influence successfully with stakeholders at senior/board level
13. Bring a flexible, innovative approach to developing solutions for our clients and be enthused by the opportunity to solve complex problems for them
14. Be able to work well as part of a team, and lead by example with a motivational, hands-on approach, including supporting with the coaching and development of junior colleagues within your Business Unit.
15. Be able to articulate innovative and complex ideas, and develop them into tangible offerings
16. Look out for Business Development and intra/inter-practice referral opportunities as appropriate
17. Have the flexibility to travel to client and other Hymans Robertson offices when required
