Liverpool Clinical Laboratories are looking to recruit a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) to become part of our Clinical Immunology & H&I team. We are looking for a confident, enthusiastic and hardworking individual with good communication and teamwork skills.
You will be responsible for receiving and processing patient samples when they first arrive in the laboratory, ensuring they are ready for analysis. You will also be involved with data entry, sample processing for referral sites, and general housekeeping duties. You will work alongside your fellow MLAs and the wider laboratory team.
The successful candidate will be expected to handle and process a range of human biological samples to prepare for appropriate sample analysis and support the BMS team in carrying out a range of technical duties in order to provide a comprehensive range of analyses/investigations in the provision of the Clinical Immunology service.
Ensure the confidentiality of patient records and data according to the Data Protection Act 1998, GDPR, and Caldicott Guidelines.
To perform all laboratory duties diligently and with due care and consideration to the health, safety, and welfare of oneself and others.
Undergo on-the-job training to develop competence and confidence to perform technical duties independently.
Organise own work and ensure that results produced are validated and quality controlled.
Willingness to work 7 days including Saturdays, Sundays, and Bank Holidays.

Responsibilities include:
1. To receive and collate patient samples when they first arrive in the laboratory and perform the preliminary processing of specimens prior to analysis.
2. To store and keep a detailed archive of samples and perform any clerical duties required.
3. To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of new developments in the laboratory.
4. To bring to the attention of BMS staff any problem specimens, urgent requests, leaking samples, or any specimens that do not collate to the request form.
5. Notify senior BMS staff of stock usage and what needs to be ordered.
6. To report any adverse incidents or non-conformities or breaches of health and safety to a BMS or senior BMS.
7. Temperature monitoring of fridges, freezers, incubators, and the environment.
8. General housekeeping including removal of waste from the department, cleaning of safety cabinets, centrifuges, and work surfaces, preparing disinfectants for use, and regularly defrosting fridges and freezers.
9. Provides wards and clinics with Cryoglobulin sample pick-up and transport.
10. Assists BMS staff with the retrieval of samples for processing and sending away samples to reference laboratories.
11. To attend laboratory meetings and encourage participation in CPD.
12. To participate in Quality activities, such as audit and investigation of non-conformities.
13. To participate in H&S activities, such as risk and COSHH assessment.
