Role Purpose
Digital, Data and Technology are responsible for transforming and supporting all of the force's digital technology needs.
The Infrastructure & Applications team, within Operations, are responsible for all of the core server hardware, databases and force software applications, ensuring integrity, security and availability of force systems at all times. This includes Data Centre management, backup/disaster recovery, server and storage environments, email infrastructure, active directory and server operating systems, as well as all force operating environments, virtualisation servers and database farms.
Depending on the specific Specialism (Applications, Virtualisation, Cloud, DBA) this role is responsible for delivering specialist 3rd /4th line support for all core relevant aspects (Services, Databases, Storage, Applications, Servers etc) of all architectures including core infrastructure and application delivery platforms, including supporting the implementation and design of new applications, infrastructure and database solutions, and monitoring overall system performance.
This includes all on prem platforms as well as cloud presence such as the Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Exchange Online, Platform as a Service (PaaS) Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Software as a Service (SaaS) implementations as well as data centre management and backup/disaster recovery, server and storage environments, email infrastructure, active directory and server operating systems.
Role requirements:
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in an IT Infrastructure role with the following focuses:
* 4 years VMware management / administration experience.
* 3 years Citrix management / administration, cloud & On-Prem.
* Proficiency in Windows Server, Active Directory, and Microsoft operating systems.
* Microsoft 365 & Azure experience.
* Experience with Hyper-V.
* Knowledge of Dell switches and SANs (EqualLogic, Unity & PowerVault).
* Dell VXRail knowledge.
* Monitor and Incident reporting.
* Strong problem-solving abilities.
* Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
* Capability to mentor and up-skill team members, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
* Ability to work in a team environment and independently.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
General (all specialisms)
* Provide technical skills and knowledge to support the availability and performance of the force’s core infrastructure application delivery platforms, databases, including performance of data centres, data storage services, servers and back ups;
* Ensures the confidentiality, security and integrity of the force’s underlying infrastructure;
* Provide technical knowledge that facilitates the relevant incident, configuration, availability, capacity, continuity and release management in line with agreed procedures;
* Provide and disseminate specialist/technical advice on issues relating to the service, interpreting or assessing force needs and exercising judgment to make decisions when solutions are not obvious;
* Assist the DDaT Manager (Infrastructure & Applications) in formulating strategic direction for the team;
* Act as a point of escalation for complex technical issues arising through the helpdesk, facilitating timely resolution;
* Monitor and manage service levels and performance standards for the team; • Have regular contact with various key stakeholders across the force in order to achieve desirable outcomes;
* To provide reports and business cases in support of making recommendations for improvements or amendments to systems within the team;
* Plan and organise individual or team activity to meet the demands on the infrastructure workload;
* Provide specialist technical assistance to projects which may often be complex in nature, ensuring solutions meet the required quality levels and that specialist information and/or advice is offered to assist senior colleagues in making appropriate decisions;
* Interpret statistical data and advise management of trends;
* Revise or develop procedures and policies, and contribute to their successful implementation in order to deliver appropriate benefits and ensure legislative or security requirements are met;
* Coordinate standardised processes (e.g. change and release management) for hardware or software changes across various technical teams within the department;
* Take ownership of major incidents, major changes, and major releases; • Ensure the currency of force applications (adopting an ‘n-1’ model where possible);
* Mentor associate Engineers and matrix management of other technical disciplines where required (i.e Service Desk, End User Compute)
* Contribute, present and share information with senior internal and external stakeholders where required (i.e. Adopting standards, sharing learning) • Provided technical input into Roadmaps and Technical Strategy, collaborate with peers and support senior colleagues in shaping longer term plans
* Ensuring value for money and utilisation of all services and licences owned.
Specific Disciplines
* Provide technical expertise in all database architectures.
* Provide technical expertise in all commercial and bespoke applications. • Design, build, test, deploy, analyse, administer, monitor and maintain on-premise and cloud-based infrastructure services to prescribed architectural patterns.
* Manage the security, availability, capability, and performance of on-premise and cloud-based systems using specialist knowledge of cloud technologies and cloud security
* Administrating M365 components (Teams, SharePoint, One Drive, EOL)
