Business Engineering Manager (Fleet) - (BEM.1)

As the Business Engineering Manager (BEM), you will be responsible for supporting the delivery of the vehicle engineering strategy, encompassing Vehicle Maintenance Units (VMU) and fleet across the business. You will collaborate closely with operational stakeholders to ensure adherence to engineering-oriented policies, procedures, and legal requirements. You will work alongside operations to keep vehicles on the road and available for use in a cost-effective and legally compliant manner, while also producing and managing engineering budgets in line with business timetables. Providing clear direction and setting objectives for your team and colleagues, you will focus on maintaining the lowest asset ‘whole life cost’ without compromising on compliance or standards. Additionally, you will support management teams in achieving key business objectives and foster strong employee and customer relations to meet financial and cultural targets.
You will work closely with key stakeholders across the Retail Division, including Fleet Engineering Manager (FEM), Site General Managers, Site Health, Safety and Wellbeing Managers, and other Business Operations Managers.

What you’ll do:
Your key accountabilities will include:
* VMU Leadership – ensure management of VMUs and teams across your area of responsibility.
* Service Level Agreement Leadership: Implement and manage service levels to ensure all VMU and fleet-related services meet or exceed expectations.
* Policy Compliance: Ensure that all company policies are adhered to personally and by staff or suppliers under your direct control, escalating any issues to relevant management.
* Process Improvement: Contribute to the continuous improvement of processes, methods, and operating practices within the VMU/engineering function to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
* Vehicle Management: Manage the integration of new vehicles into the business and oversee the disposal of displaced equipment, ensuring the completion of all necessary administration.
* Collaboration for Improvement: Work in conjunction with managers and operators in the continuous pursuit of engineering improvements and cost reductions, ensuring optimal performance.
* Compliance Enhancement: Aim to improve compliance related to prohibitions and MOT failures by enhancing engineering standards and providing education to operators and drivers.
* Industry Engagement: Actively participate in industry bodies and committees to benefit both yourself and the company, while ensuring that the company's interests and standards are upheld.
* Resource Planning: Undertake departmental and resource planning, ensuring the successful delivery of these plans in alignment with business objectives.
* Operational Information Management: Provide the required operational information and ensure that departmental systems and reports are maintained to support smooth operations.
* Disciplinary and Grievance Management: Address disciplinary and grievance matters in line with company procedures, ensuring fair and consistent application of policies.
* Cross-functional Communication: Communicate effectively across all functions, with a particular focus on collaboration with Human Resources, Finance, and Central Parts functions.
* Customer Relations: Build rapport, develop trust, and foster respect from both internal and external customers, enhancing relationships and driving business success.
* Operational Reporting: Provide daily and weekly operational reports and status updates, reviewing progress and making necessary adjustments to ensure project success.
* Safety Management: Ensure the timely investigation and resolution of safety-related fleet and engineering issues, maintaining the highest standards of safety and compliance.
* Employee Relations: Contribute to the management, development, and delivery of effective employee relations practices within a unionised environment.
* Performance Management: Manage through others by setting targets, objectively measuring performance, and providing regular feedback and coaching as part of the company appraisal process.
* Staff Development: Motivate and develop staff through controlled delegation, aiming to achieve team goals, support career progression, and plan for succession.
Who you are:
Your skills and experience will include:
* Extensive experience in engineering management, preferably within fleet or logistics.
* Ideally degree or HNC qualification.
* Strong knowledge of vehicle maintenance, manual handling equipment, and sustainability practices.
* Proven leadership in managing complex projects and resources effectively.
* Experience in budget management, cost reduction, and process improvements.
* Excellent communication skills with the ability to build strong relationships.
* Experience working in a unionised environment with effective employee relations.
* Commitment to ensuring safety, compliance, and industry best practices.
