This is a 40-bedded unit which opened in June 2001 as part of the reconfiguration of neurosciences services across Greater Manchester. There is a possibility that the number of beds may be increased to 50 in the near future. It offers post-acute neurorehabilitation for patients all over Greater Manchester. Patients have a variety of neurological impairments arising from acquired brain injury to other neurological conditions. Some will have received their acute treatment at the Neurosciences Centre at Salford Royal Hospital prior to transfer to the INRU for ongoing neurorehabilitation. In addition, patients will also be transferred onto the unit from other hospitals and the community. There are three part-time Consultant posts attached to the INRU as well as a full-time specialty doctor. There is also a full specialist multidisciplinary team based on the unit. The unit receives approximately 80-100 patients per year, with the outpatient patient number being approximately 400-500 per year.
