We are currently looking for an ambitious, self motivated and committed individual to join our skilled and motivated technical team.
Candidates will be enthusiastic, outgoing, motivated and innovative, with good organisational skills and well developed communication skills.
The Microbiology department provides a clinical laboratory service to NHS Dumfries & Galloway 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Dumfries & Galloway has a population of 150,000 people covered by approximately 175 General Practitioners who all access the laboratories. Approximately 140,000 Microbiology requests are received per year, 50-65% of requests come from the primary care sector, and the remainder comes from work generated by hospital sites.
Applicants must have a flexible approach to work. You will be required to become proficient in the use of analytical equipment after suitable training, following Departmental SOPs and will rotate through the laboratory into different areas including molecular diagnostics.
An increasing part of a medical laboratory service is compliance with regulatory bodies, such as UKAS. You will be required to assist in helping the department in maintaining its accreditation status to ISO15189 laboratory standards.
Applications are welcomed from individuals whom have an IBMS accredited degree or equivalent in Biomedical Science and are HCPC registered. Consideration will be given to applicants who are HCPC registered but lack relevant laboratory experience equivalent to a Specialist Biomedical Scientist and are willing to undertake the IBMS Specialist Diploma in medical microbiology. These candidates, if successful, will be required to complete their Specialist Portfolio in post prior to progression to Band 6. During the period of training, Annex 21 will be applied to post, where the successful candidate will be paid a percentage of the fully qualified rate as follows:
Year 1: 65% of the pay band maximum; Year 2: 70% of the pay band maximum; Year 3: 75% of the pay band maximum.
The shift pattern for this job is 5 days over 7 (including weekends, early and late shifts). An immediate start is required once pre-employment checks are completed.
Interviews will be held on 7th and 8th April 2025, and will be in person only, at the Laboratories, Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, Dumfries. You should note that unfortunately, due to interview panel's availability, no further interview dates are available after that date.
