ETCS Project Engineer
Location : Leeds
Type : Permanent
Salary : c.£60,000 + TOC Travel Card
Start Date : ASAP | 1-Stage Interview Process
Reports to : Lead ETCS Project Engineer
A leading TOC is looking for a motivated and technically skilled ETCS Project Engineer to join a dedicated ERTMS team in Leeds. This is a key hire supporting the ongoing fitment and rollout of European Train Control System (ETCS) technology across the fleet—most critically, Class 66 locomotives.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with either:
~ Hands-on Class 66 experience in an engineering/project capacity
OR
~ ETCS/ERTMS systems project experience, ideally with exposure to technical documentation, change control, and assurance.
You'll play a crucial part in bringing one of the UK’s most important modernisation projects up to pace and ensuring its long-term success.
What You’ll Be Doing:
Supporting the installation, testing, and reliability analysis of ETCS across the fleet.
Leading and contributing to design scrutiny—including interpreting and reviewing technical drawings (electrical/pneumatic), modification/testing procedures, and safety compliance.
Assisting with in-house locomotive testing and depot readiness for ETCS maintenance.
Collaborating with stakeholders to identify operational efficiencies and drive continuous improvement.
Producing clear progress and risk reports, and escalating engineering concerns to senior leadership.
Supporting policy and process updates across the business to reflect ERTMS implementation.
Representing the organisation in national ERTMS working groups and stakeholder workshops.
Acting as a visible, on-site technical point of contact to help rollout momentum.
What We’re Looking For:
Solid engineering experience—either with ETCS onboard systems or as a Class 66 fleet/project engineer.
Experience with change documentation and technical assurance processes.
Strong understanding of relevant UK rail legislation (RIR, ROGS, Railway Group Standards).
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; able to navigate technical drawings and modification documentation with confidence.
Self-driven and flexible, able to work under pressure with a proactive attitude.
Ideally degree-qualified, but Level 4 qualifications with relevant experience will also be considered.
Why Now?
This role is critical to the success of an ongoing project, with ETCS fitment now active, we need someone who can take ownership and drive delivery on the ground.
If you're a technically minded engineer ready to make a real impact on the future of UK rail freight, we want to hear from you.
