Position Summary:
Working within the global Product Development Team, The Electronics Team’s primary function is to design and implement hardware solutions to facilitate delivery of state-of-the-art Cancer Diagnostics products.
We develop our own instrumentation, comprising of embedded electronics, sensors, motor drives, and actuators. We collaborate closely with Mechanical Design and Software Development teams to ensure we have the right technology solutions.
Our embedded systems are based on the latest Intel Atom System-on-Modules (SoM), microcontrollers including STM32 and NXP LPC, and Intel (Altera) FPGAs. Our systems feature multiple sensors including optical, temperature, pressure, and position, used to monitor liquids, temperatures, and pressures in heating and cryogenic systems. Positional sensors and motor drives are used in complex automated systems with multiple stepper motor controls.
The ideal candidate will have experience bringing products to market, solving technical challenges, and a good general knowledge of electronics spanning some of these areas: analogue design, digital design, PCB design, embedded systems design, wiring design, and power electronics.
Essential Job Functions and Accountabilities:
* Lead the development of hardware projects for new high-quality scientific instruments, including a diverse range of sensors, actuators, motors, switch mode power supplies, analogue measurement, microcontrollers, and embedded systems.
* Schematic design, ranging from embedded systems (e.g. an 8 layer PCBA hosting a microcontroller, SPI, I2C, CAN, FPGA, USB, HDMI, Ethernet) to specialist PCBAs for analogue sensors. PCB design is a plus.
* Design and implementation of test solutions for PCBAs and instruments, including JTAG, Labview/National Instruments, or other automated systems. Work with suppliers on defining ICT, FCT, and boundary scan test requirements.
* Generate test plans, protocols, and reports for verification testing of new designs.
* Document design work to support relevant Technical Reviews and Regulatory Requirements.
* Provide technical support as required to other business functions (e.g. Production, Field Service).
Qualifications / Skills:
* Demonstrable ability to bring products to market and move engineering projects to completion.
* Degree in electronic engineering or equivalent.
* Experience in circuit design, schematic capture, and circuit board design, ideally using packages such as PADS Standard, PADS Professional, Altium Designer, or Cadence.
* Circuit simulation using a range of tools including LTSpice and TI-TINA. Any signal integrity experience using Hyperlynx and Altium Signal Analyzer is advantageous.
* Experience with hardware implementation of ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers such as STM32 and NXP LPC, NXP RT1024. Any C/C++ coding is an advantage to support board bring-up.
* EMC testing and investigation. Experience of radio certification is a plus.
* Digital design experience using Lattice or Intel (Altera) FPGAs, with VHDL or Verilog is nice to have but not essential.
* Design experience of working to standards and approvals, ideally within a regulated industry.
* Familiarity with typical system design lifecycle and Verification & Validation.
* Occasional UK and global travel.
