FINTEC recruit is seeking a commercial Technical Vessel Operations Manager for our marine client. This is a permanent position based in South Shields. Salary is circa £60,000 plus benefits. There will be some travel involved in the role within the UK and to overseas Shipyards. You will have a proven track record in onshore Technical Shipyard operations; while possessing excellent teamwork and able to communicate and facilitate change and motivate others. This would suit a Chief Engineer looking to move into a Technical Manager role.
Responsibilities:
1. Manage vessel operations, including financial budget, meeting company objectives and KPI’s.
2. Manage the conception, design, contract and technical appraisal of all specifications and drawings; supervision, approval and acceptance of the complete vessels.
3. Provide technical support to the Operational Director and Operations Departments.
4. Communicate and implement ideas and procedures to further enhance the company’s efficiency and profitability.
5. Survey inspection and purchase of vessels, close liaison with sellers and Classification Societies, inspection reporting Technical evaluation, and acceptance of the vessels.
6. Ensure vessel compliance with Statutory & Classification requirements.
7. Investigate and identify actual and potential technical causes of loss and propose and implement corrective and/or preventative action.
8. Review dry dock/maintenance specifications and submit the same to agreed shipyards for quotation.
9. Oversee activities and appraise performance of Vessel Managers.
10. Coordinate with engineering teams and contractors to address complex technical challenges, ensuring adherence to best practices in repair and maintenance processes.
Skills and Experience required for the commercial marine Technical Manager role:
1. Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of marine engineering, ship repair techniques, and dry-docking processes, with specific experience in Defence Maritime operations.
2. Experience: Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a technical or engineering role within the marine or ship management industry, with a focus on docking or dry-docking operations.
3. Certification: Hold a valid Certificate of Competency (CoC) as a Chief Engineer, with prior experience serving in a similar role on vessels.
4. Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead and manage technical teams, with strong supervisory skills in overseeing contractors and engineering staff.
5. Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with maritime regulations and classification society requirements, particularly those applicable to RFA and Royal Navy operations.
6. Problem-Solving Skills: Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving technical issues.
7. Communication Skills: Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly to diverse stakeholders.
8. Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail in managing technical operations, inspections, and documentation.
9. Ability to communicate with industry bodies at a senior level.
10. Assertive with excellent negotiation skills.
11. Willingness to travel globally.
12. Desirable: 5 years Ship Management, Operational Experience or Shipyard Management.
