Salary for this Role: From £32,370 to £36,680 with benefits, subject to skills and experience.
Contract term: This is a full-time permanent position on Crick terms and conditions of employment. The role is expected to be on-site.
Summary
The Biological Research Facility (BRF) supports all animal research at the Crick through its comprehensive animal care and use programme. The BRF provides the Crick's laboratory animal resource and technical services. High quality multidisciplinary in-vivo and ex-vivo research support is at the heart of the BRF's philosophy and operations. The BRF is committed to improving animal welfare, scientific quality, care of staff and transparency for stakeholders. The BRF teams integrate husbandry of multiple species within a range of facilities, using state of the art technologies, via a talented and skilled team.
The BRF Junior Database Analyst will be part of the BRF’s Business Support team and will support and report to the BRF Data Analyst. The role will help the BRF Data Analyst in support of the BRF helpdesk functions, deliver training in the use of the chosen animal registration systems to promote standardisation of working practices across the institute, and support the wider BRF Business Support team.
The helpdesk function provides a means to support the end users with any database related issues, as well as providing bespoke reporting functions, as necessary.
Additionally, the role will maintain and support the development of existing and new reports using tools such as Power BI, SQL and Python.
Key Responsibilities
These include but are not limited to:
* Provide technical support for all stakeholders via the Service Now ticketing system.
* Be available for ad-hoc visits from users and BRF staff.
* Liaise with the IT helpdesk team and provide in-person support within the BRF units.
* Contribute to the management and use of reporting platforms such as Power BI (including scheduling of data refresh, publishing of reports into designated workspaces, Apps, dashboards and assisting with documentation and version control).
* Demonstrate and promote the use of available reporting tools to others.
* Develop and implement data pipelines and workflows to facilitate Extract Transform and Load processes as a precursor to generating reports and dashboards, primarily using SQL and Python.
* Develop and maintain reports for stakeholders to assist with routine operation of the business.
* Be involved with the delivery & development of the training programs for different user groups.
* Be available to staff for troubleshooting and training, and regularly work from within the unit encouraging best practice.
* Develop a ‘BRF systems user manual’ covering all key platforms (Service Now; MCMS; ARMIS; SharePoint; Notion), which will be used to inform use policies for each system.
* Carry out extensive beta testing of new developments within the systems ahead of deployment.
* Support to the senior management team and director of the BRF on any other appropriate project as required.
In addition, the postholder is expected to assist with the wider responsibilities of the Business support team as necessary. This will include:
* Providing cover for the Administrative Assistant and assisting in the basic duties of the administrative support team.
* Learning the basics of the Shipping Team, to be able to provide support and cover as well as assisting in simple shipments.
* Assisting the Education & Training team with administrative work supporting their IT systems.

Essential skills/experience
* Demonstrated experience in a related field.
* Experience of working with Microsoft’s office portfolio of tools, especially Excel skills for data manipulation & reporting, with a good knowledge of pivot tables and other advanced features.
* Proven experience with or willingness to work with animal models.
* Able to take the lead, work independently and drive a project forward.
* Experience of contributing effectively to the work of a team, a flexible and cooperative approach to working with others.
* Excellent project planning, timekeeping, organisational and record-keeping skills.
* Proven & demonstrable experience of database management, as well as an understanding of the code and programming behind the programme.
* Ability to organise and prioritise their own workload to meet defined and conflicting deadlines, fluctuations in function and resource availability and maintain standards.
* Successful experience of interacting with all levels of staff and of providing an excellent level of customer service.
* Ability to think beyond the immediate work area and make links between areas.

* Ability to understand and convey technical ideas, concepts and procedures in clear, concise and accurate English.
Desired skills/experience
* Previous experience in an academic/research environment.
* Experience of animal husbandry or colony management.
* Familiarity with animal management databases such as MCMS and Armis.
* Familiarity with the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 and past or present holder of a personal licence.
* Experience working with Microsoft Power Platform e.g. Power BI & Power Apps.
* Experience of building Power BI reporting solutions (desktop and web versions) including Power BI DAX skills.
* Familiarity with Python, Git and ServiceNow platforms.
* Intermediate SQL skills, including the awareness of complex queries.
