Ward 30 is a 27 bedded elderly and dementia medical ward in the Aintree site.
Under the supervision and direction of a registered nurse, assisting the Ward / Department team in providing the highest possible standard of basic care for patients and their families/carers.
As a Band 2 Health Care Assistant, duties will include supporting the registered nursing teams in providing patient care and clinical duties such as:
1. Assisting patients with extended personal hygiene needs.
2. Meeting patients' nutritional needs, including completing risk assessments and implementing plans of care.
3. Providing pressure area care.

This is a full-time job, which involves rotating and working day and night shifts.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Support all individuals through effective communication.
2. General bed making/making up of clean beds in readiness for new admissions and operation beds (Refer to policy for the care of mattresses and beds).
3. Clear and clean vacated bed spaces and prepare ready for use according to the ward/unit protocol.
4. Prepare used linen bags for collection by Porters and ensure adequate supply of linen bags/skips ready for use.
5. Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment in all areas.
6. Collection of blood products as required from the laboratory.
7. Safe disposal of clinical waste and sharps as per Trust policy.
8. Be familiar with Trust policy and procedure for reporting clinical incidents, reporting incidents if they occur.
9. Provide support and assistance to new and junior members of staff.
10. Support members of the nursing team in the management of abusive and aggressive behaviour with supervision.
11. Contribute to the Health, Safety and Security of individuals.

Care Duties:
1. Assist patients in meeting their hygiene needs and carry out all aspects of personal care and grooming (to include emptying catheter bags).
2. Provision of patients' toileting needs, ensuring privacy and dignity is maintained.
3. Support patients in managing incontinence.
4. Measure patients' fluid intake and output using fluid balance charts and report information to the Registered nurse.
5. Preparation and serving of patients' meals, drinks, and snacks, assisting/feeding patients as necessary.
6. Assist patients in completing menu forms and liaise with the Catering Department regarding the number of meals needed.
7. Report patients' dietary intake as indicated in the patients' plan of care.
8. Carry out any movement and handling within the safe practice guidelines from mandatory training and in relation to the patient’s manual handling plan.
9. Enable patients to maintain/improve their mobility by use of exercise and mobility appliances as directed by individual care plans.
10. Assist in the prevention of pressure sore development as directed by the Registered nurse in conjunction with the patient’s plan of care.
11. Obtain specimens from patients for ward or laboratory testing.
12. Escort patients to clinical departments within the hospital.
13. Assist Registered Nurse in performing last offices.
14. General observations of patients, reporting anything untoward to Registered Nursing Staff.
15. Initiate Basic Life Support techniques as appropriate and provide assistance to the registered nurse as required in prolonged resuscitation situations.
16. Ensure due regard is given to the customs, values, and spiritual beliefs of patients and carers.
